Apple rolled out digital IDs to more iPhone users today, giving residents in select U.S. states a quick way to store their driver’s license or state ID inside the Wallet app. The update lets you show your identity without pulling out a physical card. It works on both the iPhone and Apple Watch, so you can move through checkpoints faster and with less hassle.
Illinois is the latest state to receive support. The feature went live after the announcement yesterday, and residents can now add their ID by opening the Wallet app and tapping the plus icon in the top right. The system guides you through the setup, and it stays simple from start to finish.
Apple says Wallet IDs work at TSA checkpoints in more than 250 airports. This includes Chicago’s O’Hare and Midway, which handle millions of passengers every year. The company notes that some businesses and venues also accept Wallet IDs, but there is no confirmed list yet.
How to Add Your ID
You can add your license or state ID by opening Wallet, tapping the plus button, and choosing Driver’s License and ID Cards. The app then verifies your identity with on-screen steps. You only need an iPhone 8 or later with iOS 16.5 or later. You can also use an Apple Watch Series 4 or later with watchOS 9.5 or later.
This update expands Apple’s digital ID rollout and gives more people a secure and contactless way to verify themselves. Let us know in the comments if you plan to add your ID to Wallet.
