The engineering team at Apple has shared a practical detail about its upcoming foldable smartphone, the iPhone Duo. According to a company executive, the inner folding display features a special cover layer designed to reduce the visibility of the screen crease. What makes this interesting is that owners can simply replace this layer when it wears down over time, helping the device keep a fresh appearance long after purchase.

The nano-texture screen layer can be peeled off and swapped

During a recent interview on TikTok, vice president of hardware engineering Kate Bergeron explained the unique display design. She noted that while the matte finish does a great job hiding the fold, the nano-texture cover sitting on top of the iPhone Duo screen is actually meant to be removable.

This means you can peel off the old layer and put on a new one. Replacing this part will cost $19 for users who subscribe to the company’s extended warranty plan. The price for people without coverage is not public yet.

The ability to swap out this cover helps address a common issue with folding phones, where the crease becomes more noticeable with age. While replacing the layer will not remove the physical bend in the screen itself, it should make the inner iPhone display look almost brand new again.

Currently, it is not clear if customers can handle this replacement at home or if it requires a trip to an authorized service provider. The new foldable goes up for pre-order on October 16, so more repair details will likely emerge as it reaches stores.
