Astronauts are taking more Apple hardware beyond Earth. We already knew NASA used the latest iPhone for a recent moon mission. But a new video from the International Space Station shows another popular gadget floating around up there. Astronaut Jessica Meir posted a clip of her daily workout routine, and viewers quickly spotted her wearing AirPods.
Astronauts aboard ISS are using AirPods to keep fit and block out station noise
The space station is a very loud place. Machines and equipment run constantly to keep the crew safe and breathing. Meir pointed out in her video that the background noise is intense. She uses her AirPods to listen to things while training on a resistance machine.
Daily exercise is a hard rule in space. Without gravity, astronauts lose bone density and muscle mass fast. Their bodies miss out on the natural workout of just walking around. They have to use special gear designed to copy the feeling of heavy lifting.
If you drop a wireless earbud at your local gym, it usually bounces under a heavy rack. Up in orbit, losing an AirPod might actually be easier to deal with. Without gravity to drag it to the floor, a dropped earbud would just float right next to you.
It makes sense that astronauts want normal tech up there. Apple is clearly seeing its products become part of standard space travel. We watched an iPhone take pictures of the moon, and now we are seeing AirPods help astronauts get through a gym session.
