Apple capitalized on the artificial intelligence boom last year without even needing to launch a major competitor of its own. Between January and August 2025, revenue from generative AI applications on the App Store skyrocketed, bringing the tech giant nearly $900 million in commission fees.
This massive financial windfall demonstrates the massive power of controlling the hardware and software ecosystems where people access modern digital tools.
Third-party AI app developers fueled the growth
App Store revenue from artificial intelligence tools grew rapidly throughout the year. According to market data from AppMagic, monthly earnings from these specific applications jumped from about $35 million in January to a peak of $101 million by August. The majority of this money came directly from subscriptions to existing services.
OpenAI proved to be the biggest contributor to this surge. Subscriptions for ChatGPT accounted for nearly 75 percent of the total commission gains Apple collected from generative tools.
Another prominent platform, Grok, represented about five percent of those earnings. Apple managed to secure these profits simply by providing the digital storefront and distribution network, taking its standard cut of all in-app purchases.
Apple is earning while competitors are burning money on AI
This sudden influx of cash arrives at a highly convenient time for the company. While competitors spend hundreds of billions on massive data centers and frontier language models, Apple has opted for a different approach. The company focuses heavily on processing information directly on the device using its own custom silicon chips and local data.
Industry reports suggest Apple recently formed a partnership with Google to use Gemini as the foundational technology for an upgraded version of Siri. That agreement is rumored to cost around $1 billion annually. The commissions Apple collected from third-party application subscriptions last year could effectively offset the cost of integrating external technology into the iPhone operating system.
By acting as the primary gateway for consumers to reach these popular chatbots, Apple secures a steady stream of revenue while letting other companies absorb the massive initial development costs.
