Apple launched the MacBook Neo as its most affordable Mac notebook, but the company made a clear compromise to reach the $599 price. The new laptop ships with only 8GB of RAM, and Apple does not offer any upgrade option. Every other Mac currently starts with 16GB memory, so this configuration stands out as the lowest memory option across the lineup.
Because of that limitation, the MacBook Neo focuses on everyday computing rather than heavy professional workloads. Apple pairs the 8GB RAM with the A18 Pro chip, the same processor used in the iPhone 16 Pro models, which allows the laptop to handle writing, web browsing, schoolwork, and light photo or video editing without major issues. At the same time, users who rely on memory-intensive workflows will notice the difference compared with Macs that ship with 16GB RAM or more.
The company designed the device to reach a lower price point, and the memory decision plays a large role in that strategy. Apple previously offered an 8GB option on the MacBook Air, but the company raised the baseline to 16GB in October 2024, and since then every Mac has shipped with at least that amount. MacBook Neo reverses that trend to make the system more accessible to students and first-time Mac users.
8GB RAM
Apple appears to balance performance and affordability with the memory configuration. Global memory shortages have pushed component prices higher, and using 8GB RAM helps Apple keep the starting price at $599.
Even with that limitation, the laptop still supports Apple Intelligence features because the A18 Pro chip includes a 16-core Neural Engine that handles on-device AI tasks. The system can summarize notes, apply photo edits, and run other AI features directly on the device.
Everyday Performance and Availability
The MacBook Neo targets everyday tasks rather than heavy creative workloads. Users can browse the web, create documents, stream content, and manage school or office work without trouble, while the fanless design keeps the laptop silent during regular use.
Apple also equipped the laptop with a 13-inch Liquid Retina display, a 1080p FaceTime camera, Wi-Fi 6E, and up to 16 hours of battery life. The device starts at $599 and is already available for pre-order, with retail availability scheduled to begin on March 11.
