Apple Pay and Tap to Pay on iPhone are not the same service. Apple Pay is the consumer feature that lets an iPhone or Apple Watch pay at a register, available in 89 markets by Apple’s own count. Tap to Pay on iPhone is the merchant feature that turns an iPhone into the register itself, and it covers a smaller footprint of 50 markets.
Both figures come from the same Apple newsroom recap, published January 12, 2026, and both are checked again here against Apple’s current pages ahead of iOS 27‘s Monday release.
Apple Pay, in Apple’s own numbers
| Apple Pay | Apple’s stated figure |
|---|---|
| Markets | 89 |
| Bank and network partners | More than 11,000 |
| Fraud eliminated | “Well over $1 billion in fraud globally” |
| Merchant sales generated | “More than $100 billion in incremental merchant sales globally” |
Apple’s recap also states that Apple Pay purchases during the 2025 holiday season “significantly outpaced the overall growth in consumer spending levels,” without giving an exact percentage for either figure.

Tap to Pay on iPhone, a different service entirely
| Tap to Pay on iPhone | Apple’s stated figure |
|---|---|
| Markets | 50, after expanding to 34 additional markets in 2025, “now covering most of Europe” |
| Merchants | More than 15 million, of “all sizes across the world” |
| Device requirement | iPhone XS or later; Apple’s business page adds it “works best with the latest version of iOS” |
| What it needs | A supported point-of-sale or payment app; no extra card reader or terminal |
Tap to Pay on iPhone lets a business accept “physical debit and credit cards” as well as Apple Pay and other digital wallets, all tapped against the merchant’s own iPhone, according to Apple’s business page. That page does not give Tap to Pay its own merchant-sales or fraud figure the way Apple Pay’s does.
Why the two get confused
Both services use Apple’s own near-field communication hardware, both appear in Apple’s Wallet and payments documentation, and both are branded starting with the word “Apple” or “Tap.” But one is something a shopper uses to pay, and the other is something a business uses to get paid, and Apple’s own market counts for the two, 89 against 50, do not overlap because they are answering different questions.
Tap to Pay on iPhone started in one country, four years ago
Apple introduced Tap to Pay on iPhone in February 2022, and at launch it named the United States as the only country, with the iPhone XS or later requirement it still carries today. Apple’s original release named Stripe as the first payment platform to offer it, alongside the Shopify Point of Sale app, and listed American Express, Discover, Mastercard and Visa as the payment networks supporting it. Getting from one country in 2022 to 50 markets by the January 2026 recap took roughly four years, with the biggest single jump, 34 markets covering most of Europe, arriving late in that stretch.
Apple Pay’s own rollout followed a similar shape, starting in the United States years before Tap to Pay existed and expanding market by market since. Neither service publishes a country-by-country timeline; both are described here only by their most recent Apple-stated totals and, for Tap to Pay, its original 2022 starting point.
The regions page Apple keeps separate
Apple does not publish one page listing both footprints side by side. For Tap to Pay specifically, Apple’s developer site maintains a dedicated regions page, separate from any consumer-facing Apple Pay country list, and Apple’s own business page for Tap to Pay directs merchants there rather than naming the 50 markets on the page itself.
What Apple has not said
- The exact 50 markets where Tap to Pay on iPhone currently works; Apple’s own page defers to a separate developer regions list rather than naming them.
- An exact percentage for how much Apple Pay’s 2025 holiday spending outpaced overall consumer spending.
- Any change to either market count since the January 12, 2026 recap.
- Whether Tap to Pay on iPhone gains any iOS 27 specific feature; nothing in the pages checked here names one.
Today is Sunday, September 13, 2026. Both figures above are current as of Apple’s most recent published recap and this week’s live check of Apple’s own pages, five days before iPhone 18 Pro, Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4 reach stores on Friday, September 18.
