Apple reportedly reserved around 80% of its initial iPhone Duo inventory for its physical retail stores, explaining why online pre-orders quickly slipped into January while customers lining up on launch day had better chances of getting the company’s first foldable iPhone.
According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, who shared the details on his latest Power On podcast, Apple prioritized retail availability when distributing its limited launch inventory. The decision meant that many customers who visited Apple Stores on October 23 managed to purchase the device despite lengthy online delivery estimates.
Apple Stores Received Most of the Initial iPhone Duo Inventory
Gurman, citing people familiar with Apple’s logistics, revealed that inventory varied significantly between locations, with flagship stores receiving considerably more units than smaller outlets.

Here’s how Apple reportedly distributed its initial stock:
| Location | Reported inventory |
|---|---|
| Smaller Apple Stores | As few as 50 units |
| Major flagship stores | Up to approximately 250 units |
| Apple Fifth Avenue, New York | Unusually large allocation |
| Overall retail allocation | Around 80% of initial stock |
Apple’s Fifth Avenue flagship reportedly received additional inventory because company executives attended the launch celebrations.
Apple also highlighted the iPhone Duo’s arrival at stores worldwide, where customers lined up to experience and purchase the device.
Why iPhone Duo Online Orders Were Delayed Until January
The iPhone Duo pre-order window opened on October 16, but delivery estimates slipped to late January within minutes as demand quickly exceeded the stock allocated to online orders.
Apple described early demand as “nothing short of extraordinary” and said it was working to fulfill orders as quickly as possible.
The company has yet to disclose total launch shipments or confirm when online availability will improve.
iPhone Duo Pricing and Availability
The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 in the United States, with four storage options:
- 256GB: $1,999
- 512GB: $2,199
- 1TB: $2,599
- 2TB: $3,199
Customers can check their preferred configuration through Apple’s online store and look for local pickup availability.
Those considering Apple’s first foldable can also review its specifications, design, and features before ordering.
Although Apple’s retail-first inventory strategy helped more walk-in customers secure devices on launch day, availability remains limited, and delivery estimates will depend on future shipments.
