Apple Watch Series 12 lists three case materials, aluminum, titanium and ceramic, which is one more than any Apple Watch has offered since 2021. Stainless steel, which Apple’s own spec sheets named as recently as Series 9, is not on the 2026 list at all.

Read across Apple’s published spec sheets and the material column has changed four times in five generations. That is worth laying out, because the case material is the one Series 12 decision Apple has priced for only one of the three options.

Stainless steel’s last appearance was Series 9

Series 7, Series 8 and Series 9 all list a stainless steel case. Series 10 does not, and neither does Series 11 or Series 12. Apple has not said it discontinued the material, and it has not said it will not return, so the only supportable statement is that no watch Apple currently sells is offered in it.

The three watches on sale now are aluminum, titanium or ceramic: Apple Watch SE 3 in aluminum from $249, Series 12 in all three from $399, and Apple Watch Ultra 4 in 49mm Grade 5 titanium from $799. Those are From prices, and Apple publishes nothing per material.

Titanium left the Series line, then came back

Titanium is the one material that has gone both ways. Series 7 listed it in 2021, Series 8 and Series 9 did not, and Series 10 brought it back in 2024 at 95 percent recycled titanium. Series 11 and Series 12 both list 100 percent recycled titanium, in radiant gold and natural for 2026.

Ultra has been titanium throughout. Apple described the 2022 original as aerospace-grade titanium and has listed Grade 5 titanium from Ultra 2 onward, with Ultra 4 at 100 percent recycled titanium and 45 percent recycled material overall.

Ceramic is the only genuinely new material this year

Apple presents ceramic as new for Series 12, in pearl white and night blue, and no spec sheet between Series 7 and Ultra 3 lists a ceramic case. It behaves differently from the other two in three published ways.

  • The case is bigger: 43mm and 47mm tall and 9.85mm deep, against 42mm and 46mm and 9.7mm.
  • The front crystal is sapphire, not the Ceramic Shield 2 that aluminum gets with its 60 percent claim.
  • It is the heaviest Series 12, from 41.7 g for the smaller pearl white to 52.9 g for the larger night blue.

Apple has published no comparison with any earlier ceramic Apple Watch, and no durability or scratch data for the material.

The recycled figures, and the one that is missing

ClaimWhat Apple publishes
Series 12 recycled material overall40 percent, stated for the aluminum and titanium models
Series 12 cases100 percent recycled aluminum, 100 percent recycled titanium
Series 12 ceramic caseNo recycled-content figure published
Series 12 battery100 percent recycled cobalt, 95 percent recycled lithium
Ultra 445 percent recycled material overall, 100 percent recycled titanium case
Packaging100 percent fiber-based

The gap in that table is the ceramic row. Apple’s 40 percent figure is attached to the aluminum and titanium models, so the newest material is the one with no environmental number beside it.

What Apple has not said

No price for the titanium or ceramic Series 12, no recycled figure for ceramic, no comparison between sapphire and Ceramic Shield 2, no repair pricing for any September 2026 product, and nothing about whether stainless steel returns.

Series 12 pre-orders opened on September 9 and the watch reaches stores on Friday, September 18 along with the rest of what Apple announced that day. watchOS 27 arrives free on Monday, September 14, the same day as iOS 27, and it treats all three case materials identically.
