Buying Apple Watch Series 12 or Ultra 4 does not guarantee watchOS 27 will install on it tomorrow. Apple’s watchOS page states the update requires the paired iPhone to already be an iPhone 11 or later, or an iPhone SE (2nd generation or later), running iOS 27, and that condition applies to a brand new watch exactly as it applies to an old one.
The gap that catches people is simple: someone replaces the watch this fall but keeps the same iPhone, and that iPhone turns out to predate Apple’s iOS 27 cutoff. In that situation, the watch’s age or price has nothing to do with what happens next.

Why this trips up new-watch buyers specifically
A new Series 12 or Ultra 4 reaches stores on September 18, and it is easy to assume new hardware means the newest software follows automatically. Apple’s compatibility wording is about the iPhone’s software version, not the watch’s age. - Update the iPhone to iOS 27 first, on or after Monday, September 14, if the iPhone is on Apple’s supported list.
- Only then does the paired Apple Watch offer watchOS 27, either through the Watch app or directly on the watch.
- If the iPhone itself cannot run iOS 27, Apple has published no software path around that for the watch. We are not describing one, because Apple does not.
What Apple has not said
- Apple’s checkout pages for Series 12 and Ultra 4 do not warn a buyer that an ineligible iPhone will limit the watch’s software.
- Apple has not stated whether the Watch app distinguishes “iPhone not updated yet” from “iPhone cannot ever run iOS 27” in its messaging.
- Apple has not published any timeline for extending iOS 27, or a future watchOS, to iPhones outside the current list.
