Apple sells three watches now, and on published specs alone, five figures belong to Apple Watch Ultra 4 and no other model in the current lineup: satellite communications, dual-frequency GPS, a certified recreational-scuba depth, 3000-nit peak brightness, and a case sold only in titanium. Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch SE 3 each carry their own published numbers instead, not the same ones.
Every figure below comes from Apple’s tech specs and compare pages or its September 9 press releases. Apple Watch Ultra 3 and Ultra 2 also had some of these features, but Apple no longer sells either, so the comparison here is against what is actually on shelves this month.

Satellite communications
Apple’s compare page lists satellite features as Yes for Ultra 4 and No for both Series 12 and SE 3. Apple has already covered what those satellite features do and what they cost after the included period elsewhere, so we are noting the line item here rather than re-explaining it.

Dual-frequency GPS
Ultra 4’s connectivity spec lists “Precision dual-frequency GPS,” pulling from GPS, Galileo, QZSS and BeiDou. Series 12’s spec sheet instead lists “Precision L1 GPS,” pulling from GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, QZSS and BeiDou, an older single-frequency design. SE 3’s spec sheet, in the material we checked, does not describe its GPS as “Precision” at all.
Apple’s own description for the GPS system goes further than the spec sheet: Apple calls Ultra 4’s GPS “the most accurate on-device GPS in a sports watch.” That is Apple’s marketing language, not an independent measurement, and it applies to the dual-frequency hardware rather than to Series 12’s single-frequency system.
A certified dive depth, not just a water rating
All three current watches carry a depth gauge as a listed sensor, but they are not the same claim. Series 12’s spec sheet lists its depth gauge as reaching 6 meters, with no scuba certification attached. Ultra 4’s spec sheet lists a depth gauge accurate to plus or minus 1 meter and certified under EN13319 for recreational scuba to 40 meters, on top of the separate 100-meter ISO 22810:2010 water rating. Apple’s own material treats these as two different claims about two different things, and so do we.
Peak brightness and a titanium-only case
Ultra 4’s display peaks at 3000 nits against 2000 nits for Series 12 and 1000 nits for SE 3. Ultra 4 also ships in exactly two finishes, natural and black titanium, with no aluminum or ceramic option; Series 12 offers aluminum, titanium and ceramic, and SE 3 ships in aluminum only. Apple’s spec sheet for Ultra 4 additionally states MIL-STD 810H testing, a line that does not appear on the Series 12 or SE 3 pages we checked.

The exclusivity runs one direction. Storage, Bluetooth version and Ultra Wideband generation are identical across the lineup, and SE 3 shares the same 64GB and connectivity baseline as the other two despite its older S10 chip.
Ultra 3 and Ultra 2 both had satellite features and a dual-frequency-style GPS claim of their own before Apple stopped selling them, so none of these five specs is new to the Ultra name as a whole. What is new is that Apple has now drawn a sharper line between Ultra 4 and the two watches it still sells alongside it, rather than against watches already retired.
What Apple has not said
- Why Series 12’s depth gauge stops at 6 meters while Ultra 4’s is certified to 40.
- Whether SE 3’s GPS chip is the same hardware as Series 12’s, only described differently.
- Titanium, ceramic or cellular prices for Series 12, which would make a same-material comparison possible.
- Any MIL-STD 810H claim for Series 12 or SE 3.
