watchOS 27 arrives free on Monday, September 14, 2026, and Apple’s own support page sets two conditions before it will install: the paired iPhone must already be running iOS 27, and the Apple Watch itself must be at least 50 percent charged. Miss either one and Software Update will not offer the download.
The update covers eight current Apple Watch models: SE 3, Series 9, Series 10, Series 11, Series 12, Ultra 2, Ultra 3 and Ultra 4. Apple’s watchOS page, checked today, states the iPhone requirement as an iPhone 11 or later, or an iPhone SE (2nd generation or later), running iOS 27. That is a software gate, not a watch-hardware one, so it applies the same way to a five-year-old Series 9 as it does to a Series 12 bought last week.

Why the iPhone has to go first
Apple’s watchOS page ties the update directly to the iPhone’s software version, not just its model. An iPhone 11 that has not yet installed iOS 27 will not let a paired Apple Watch move to watchOS 27 either, even though that same iPhone is on Apple’s supported list. The practical order Apple describes is iPhone first, watch second, and its own Apple Watch update instructions repeat the same iOS version check as a prerequisite before any watch steps begin.

Apple’s two ways to install it
Apple’s support document, “Update your Apple Watch,” lays out two separate routes, and either one works once the iPhone side is settled.

What to do before you tap install
- Charge the Apple Watch to at least 50 percent; this is Apple’s own minimum, not a suggestion.
- Leave the watch on its charger while the update runs, and do not restart it, per Apple’s instructions.
- Keep the iPhone on Wi-Fi and plugged into power while it installs iOS 27 first.
- Apple Watch data is included automatically inside an iPhone backup, so a normal iPhone backup before updating covers the watch as well.
If the update seems stuck
Apple’s own troubleshooting for a watch update that will not finish is limited to a short list: restart the iPhone and the watch, reconnect the charger, and, if a downloaded update will not install, delete that update file and try again. Apple does not publish a third-party fix for this, and it publishes no procedure for moving a watch back to an older watchOS version once the new one is installed, so neither appears here.
What Apple has not said
- Apple gives no fixed time for the install, only the range “several minutes to an hour,” and that wording is not specific to watchOS 27.
- Apple has not stated a time of day the update becomes available.
