Domestic opportunities and visa rules keep top graduates at home
China is now the largest source of top-tier minds in the industry. The Carnegie China report shows that 57 percent of elite researchers earned their undergraduate degrees in China last year. This is a noticeable jump from the 46 percent recorded in 2022.
More of these graduates are choosing to stay home instead of moving overseas. The local tech industry has grown significantly, and DeepSeek now offers salaries that compete with Silicon Valley. At the same time, tighter American visa regulations for science students have made it harder to move, pushing more talent to build a career locally.

The numbers show a rapid reversal over just three years

In fact, the share of researchers working in the United States who hold a Chinese undergraduate degree actually increased by four percentage points last year. While the overall momentum has shifted, American labs still manage to pull in some of the brightest minds seeking opportunities outside their home country.
