iOS 27.2 developer beta 1 activates a FaceTime capability designed for sign language interpretation apps. The new API allows a participating app to add a human interpreter to an ongoing video call, rather than asking users to leave the conversation or arrange a separate connection.
This is a developer-facing feature, but its purpose is straightforward. A person who uses sign language can keep the people in the call together while an interpreter joins the same session. The feature does not mean FaceTime itself will translate sign language automatically, and it does not replace a professional interpreter.
What the new FaceTime API enables
- Interpreter apps can work inside a call: developers can build services that add a human interpreter to an active FaceTime video conversation.
- It supports a more direct workflow: participants do not need to coordinate a separate video room simply to bring in interpretation.
- App support will vary: the API being available does not mean every interpretation provider has an iOS 27.2-ready app on day one.
Apple previewed the accessibility-focused FaceTime work earlier this year. Its FaceTime documentation also makes clear that video calling features can vary by country or region, a consideration for any service that depends on local interpreter availability.

Privacy still matters in this arrangement. Participants should know when a third person is joining a conversation and choose a provider whose policies fit the call, particularly when the discussion involves work, education, or personal health.
Because this is a developer beta, the interface and app requirements can still change. The important development is not a new button for every FaceTime user, but a new route for accessibility apps to join a call in a more natural way.
