Communication Safety, the feature that blurs nude images in Messages, now covers gore and violent content as well, and Apple lists the change across four operating systems: iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27 and watchOS 27. Apple has not published where the assessment of a shared image or video takes place.
That makes it one of the more consequential privacy changes in the 27 cycle and one of the least described. Apple gives it a line on its privacy features page and a line in its iOS 27 feature list, and the two lines do not use the same verb. Everything below is Apple’s wording, and where Apple is silent we say so.

What Apple says the feature now does
On the privacy features page, Apple describes the change as communication safety expanding across iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27 and watchOS 27, adding warnings about gore and violent content in addition to nudity.

In the iOS 27 feature list, the same feature is described in stronger terms: Messages blurs nudity and blocks gore and violent content in shared images and videos, alongside parental approval of new contacts. Apple uses both words, warns on one page and blocks on the other, and does not reconcile them.
It does not describe the mechanism behind either. There is no statement that the check is performed on the device, and no statement that it uses Private Cloud Compute, the server path Apple names for Apple Intelligence requests. A feature description is not a data-handling statement, and this one carries none.
Four operating systems in one sentence, three in the other
The expansion sentence names four systems. The sentence about getting the features names three: Apple says the new features will be available after installing the Screen Time update in iOS 27, iPadOS 27 and macOS 27. watchOS 27 is absent from that second sentence, and Apple does not explain the difference.

Apple first previewed this set in June and repeated it in the run-up to the software release. It is the part of the 27 cycle that touches the most household data, and the part with the fewest published specifics. The features announced on September 9 are collected in our event recap.
The one age limit Apple did print
Apple publishes one hard age line in the intelligence features: Siri AI is not available to users under 13. It sits in the same footnote as the daily usage limits, which Apple applies to server-side features including Siri AI, intelligent photo editing tools, Image Playground and “AFM 3 Cloud models” in Shortcuts, and where Apple says expanded access to such features will be available for a fee in the future.
Apple has published no age line for Communication Safety itself, and no list of regions where the gore and violence warnings apply. The generic caveat on its pages is that some features may not be available in all regions or languages.
What Apple has not said
- Where a shared image or video is assessed. Apple names neither on-device processing nor Private Cloud Compute for this feature.
- Whether anything flagged is retained, by the device, by Apple or in a parent’s record, and for how long.
- What counts as gore or violent content, and how accurate the detection is.
- Why watchOS 27 appears in the expansion sentence but not in the Screen Time install sentence.
- Which regions and languages the new warnings cover.
iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27 Golden Gate and watchOS 27 all arrive on Monday, September 14 as free updates, and the child safety features need the Screen Time update installed after that. The iPhone 18 Pro ships with iOS 27 on Friday, September 18.
