iOS 27 makes three changes aimed squarely at managed iPhones on Monday: Wi-Fi Assist is renamed Connectivity Assist, device-management connections must meet stricter TLS requirements, and a supervised iPhone can be forced to install a pending update when it receives a Return to Service erase command. None of the three does anything on a personal, unmanaged iPhone.
Apple documents all three in its deployment guide rather than on apple.com/ios/, which is why they rarely surface in a features list even though they ship with the same September 14 build as Siri AI and Liquid Glass.

The rename almost nobody will notice
Wi-Fi Assist has quietly switched a device to cellular data when a Wi-Fi connection is too weak for years. On iOS 27 and iPadOS 27 it becomes Connectivity Assist, a name change Apple lists in its enterprise deployment documentation rather than on the consumer iOS 27 page. The underlying behavior is not described as changed, only the label in Settings.

Stricter TLS for the connections you never see
Across all six of the new operating systems, Apple says select system processes now enforce stricter TLS requirements for Automated Device Enrollment, configuration profile installation, app installation and software updates initiated through device management. This affects the background channel a company or school’s mobile device management server uses to talk to an iPhone, not anything a personal user configures. Apple names no specific TLS version or cipher change in the material we read, and it does not say whether the requirement applies retroactively to devices enrolled before Monday or only to new enrollments created after the update installs.
A rule that only fires after an erase command
The Return to Service rule is the most specific of the three. On iOS 27, iPadOS 27 and visionOS 27, an IT team can require a supervised device to install a pending software update at the moment it receives a Return to Service erase command, the same command used to wipe and reprovision a device for a new user. A device with no management profile and no supervision, which describes almost every personally owned iPhone 18 Pro or iPhone Duo sold this year, never triggers it. Most of what separates iOS 27 users on Monday is hardware, an older chip or a missing sensor or a device left off the Apple Intelligence list, and these three changes are the exception, gated instead by whether an iPhone carries a management profile at all. An iPhone 11 with no enrollment and an iPhone 18 Pro Max enrolled in a company’s fleet will see the identical Connectivity Assist label, but only the enrolled phone’s background connections answer to the new TLS and update rules.
