iOS 27 becomes available as a free update on Monday, September 14, and Apple’s own compatibility page still lists iPhone 11 and iPhone SE (2nd generation and later) as the floor, not iPhone 12 as some readers expect. Most of what Apple announced in June installs on those phones the same day it installs on an iPhone 18 Pro.
What does not travel down to a seven-year-old phone is anything built on Apple Intelligence, because Apple’s own device list for that starts two generations later, at iPhone 15 Pro. Apple detailed the split at its September 9 event, and here is what its published pages say ships Monday, what arrives after launch, and what the device list rules out for good.

What installs on iPhone 11 and iPhone SE on Monday
None of the following is limited to the iPhone 18 Pro lineup Apple detailed in its iPhone 18 Pro announcement. Apple’s iOS 27 page lists these as general changes, available across the full compatibility list:

- Liquid Glass, with a settings slider Apple describes as running “anywhere from ultra-clear to fully tinted”

- Safari Tab Topics, which groups related tabs automatically
- Custom EQ for AirPods, adjustable in Settings
- GymKit support directly on iPhone, for compatible gym equipment
- Cycle Tracking’s new perimenopause and menopause deviation notifications and symptom logging

Apple has also published one performance claim built on this exact hardware. App launches are “up to 30 percent faster,” a figure Apple tested on an iPhone 11 Pro Max running a prerelease build of iOS 27 against iOS 26.4.2 between April and May 2026. Apple has not published a matching test for iPhone SE, and it has not published anything about how iOS 27 behaves on either phone beyond that single figure.
What Apple says is coming after Monday
Four items on Apple’s own pages carry a later date, or no date at all:
| Feature | Status on September 14 | Apple’s stated timing |
|---|---|---|
| Siri AI in English | Ships in beta | Now |
| Siri AI in French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Spanish | Not included | October 2026 |
| Messages Suggestions | Not included | “a future software update” |
| Passwords security alerts and automatic updates | Not included | “a future software update” |
What iPhone 11 and iPhone SE never get
Apple Intelligence’s own device list, published on apple.com/apple-intelligence, begins at iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, the chip generation after the one inside iPhone 11. iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, iPhone 11 Pro Max and every generation of iPhone SE are absent from it, so Siri AI’s full assistant features, Visual Intelligence, Write with Siri, Call Context and Image Playground have no route onto these phones through iOS 27 or any update after it. Apple has not published a plan to change that, and the A20 Pro chip behind Apple Intelligence’s newest tier sits several generations above what an iPhone 11 can run.
What Apple has not said
- No release time for iOS 27
- No minimum free storage figure required to install it
- No statement on whether Safari Tab Topics or the Screen Time redesign need anything beyond a base iOS 27 install
- No date narrower than “October” for Siri AI’s additional languages
The update lands two days before iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max reach stores on September 18. Owners of an iPhone 11 or iPhone SE will know on Monday morning whether Settings shows the download at the same time as everyone else, and our iOS 27 release date coverage is tracking the rollout as it happens.
