iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max stopped being available for purchase from Apple on September 9, the day iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max were announced. Apple’s own store pages for both phones now redirect to the new models. Nowhere in Apple’s newsroom release, or anywhere else Apple publishes, does a sentence say that iPhone 17 Pro or iPhone 17 Pro Max was discontinued.
That is not unusual for Apple, which has never issued a press release specifically to mark a product’s exit. But this year the silence lands next to a $100 price increase on every older iPhone Apple kept, which makes the phones it quietly dropped a sharper contrast.

What changed, and why there is no announcement
As of today, Apple’s US store lineup reads iPhone Duo, iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone Air, iPhone 17, iPhone 17e and iPhone 16. iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max are absent. The buy page that once sold them now leads with iPhone 18 Pro starting at $1,199, exactly $100 above where the 17 Pro started a year ago. Apple’s own compare tool still lists the two retired models for spec lookups, but neither can be added to a cart. Apple’s September 9 newsroom release covers the new A20 Pro chip, the camera, the battery figures and the price of the phones it was introducing. It says nothing about the phones it was replacing. Apple does not maintain a public changelog of discontinued products anywhere on its site, so the only evidence that iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max left the lineup is the absence itself: a buy link that used to work and now points somewhere else.

What Apple Trade In shows instead
Apple’s own trade-in wording states that customers trading in an iPhone 13 or later can get $175 to $885 in credit in the US, and the $885 ceiling belongs to a flawless iPhone 17 Pro Max, the highest figure Apple currently attaches to any phone. The $785 figure recorded for iPhone 17 Pro sits just below it. Both are the values Apple’s trade-in system now returns for phones it will no longer sell you new, and both fell along with nearly every other iPhone’s trade-in figure on the same September 9 date the 17 Pro line disappeared from the shelf.
Why there is no refurbished option yet
Apple Certified Refurbished is normally where a recently discontinued iPhone reappears at a lower price once Apple has resold units. As of today, Apple’s refurbished store carries no iPhone 17 Pro or iPhone 17 Pro Max stock at all, and Apple has not published any schedule for when that might change. Anyone who wants the phone new, rather than through trade-in or the secondhand market, currently has no official Apple channel to buy one. The same gap applies to iPhone 18 Pro Max’s predecessor, which left the refurbished pipeline empty at the same time.

What replaced them
iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max take the same two positions in Apple’s lineup, at $1,199 and $1,299, a $100 increase on each predecessor’s launch price. Both new phones carry the same starting storage tier as before and add a 2TB option to the smaller Pro for the first time. Apple’s press materials describe what the new phones do; they do not describe what happened to the phones they replaced.
What Apple has not said
Apple has not explained why iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max were removed rather than kept on sale at a reduced price, the way some previous-generation iPhones have been in past years. It has not published a timetable for Apple Certified Refurbished stock, and it has not said whether the $785 and $885 trade-in figures will hold or fall further as the eSIM-only iPhone 18 Pro models ship on September 18. Anyone holding a 17 Pro or Pro Max for resale should check Apple’s trade-in page again closer to that date.
