The iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199, $100 more than the iPhone 17 Pro did at launch, and for that Apple has changed the chip, the main camera, the Dynamic Island, the battery rating, the storage ceiling, the colors and the rear finish. The design itself carries over from the 17 Pro generation.
That makes this a year where the upgrade case rests on what is inside rather than how the phone looks. Here are the eight differences that matter, drawn from Apple’s press release, with the full announcement covered in our iPhone 18 Pro roundup.
iPhone 18 Pro vs iPhone 17 Pro: the 8 differences
| Difference | iPhone 17 Pro | iPhone 18 Pro |

The differences that favor the iPhone 18 Pro
The A20 Pro is the biggest jump. Apple says its 7-core GPU is up to 40 percent faster than the A19 Pro, the 32-core Neural Engine doubles the AI processing, and memory bandwidth is up 50 percent, all cooled by a vapor chamber with about three times the performance of the prior design.

The camera is the second. The iPhone 17 Pro’s main camera has a fixed aperture, while the 18 Pro moves between f/1.48 and f/4 with six laser-cut blades and adds manual aperture and shutter speed controls.
- Battery: Apple does not restate the 17 Pro’s numbers, but it says the iPhone 18 Pro roughly matches last year’s Pro Max, so the smaller phone closes the gap.
- Dynamic Island: three Live Activities instead of two, in a smaller cutout, as our Dynamic Island leak coverage predicted.
- Storage: a 2TB tier for the first time, though Apple has not published its price.
- Colors: Black is back after the 17 Pro skipped it, at the cost of Cosmic Orange.
Should you upgrade from an iPhone 17 Pro?
If you bought a 17 Pro for its design, there is little reason to move. The sizes are the same at 6.3 and 6.9 inches, Apple did not announce changes to the Ultra Wide or front camera, and the design carries over.
If you shoot a lot of photos, want the extra day of battery on the smaller phone, or need 2TB, the 18 Pro makes a stronger case. The $100 increase is the main thing working against it.
Both phones run iOS 27 from Monday, September 14, so the 17 Pro gets the new Siri AI beta and Apple Reference Image without a hardware change. iPhone 18 Pro pre-orders open Saturday, September 12 at 5 a.m. PT, with availability from Friday, September 18. If you are staying put, the best iPhone 17 Pro deals are worth checking now that it is last year’s model.
