Apple has unveiled the iPhone 17e with meaningful upgrades over the iPhone 16e, including the new A19 chip, MagSafe support, Ceramic Shield 2, and double the base storage at 256GB. It keeps the 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR display and introduces a fresh Soft Pink color alongside Black and White. On paper, it looks like a simple value upgrade, but several smaller details shape the real story.
The iPhone 17e also brings Appleâs latest C1X modem for faster 5G, a 48MP Fusion camera with optical-quality 2x Telephoto, and support for 4K Dolby Vision video. Apple continues to focus on durability with improved scratch resistance and reduced glare, while maintaining the same $599 starting price in the United States.
Apple said in its newsroom announcement:
âiPhone 17e combines powerful performance and features our users love at an exceptional value, making it a compelling option for customers looking to upgrade to the iPhone 17 family.â
The company added that iPhone 17e is âdesigned to stay fast, secure, and valuable for years to come.â
Smaller Changes
Beyond the headline upgrades, these details deserve attention:
- C1X modem matching iPhone Air
The new C1X modem is up to 2x faster than the C1 in iPhone 16e and matches the speed of iPhone Air. It also uses 30 percent less energy than the modem in iPhone 16 Pro, which helps maintain all-day battery life. - eSIM-only in more countries
iPhone 17e removes the physical SIM slot in several regions, including the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Japan, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE. This expands Appleâs eSIM-only approach beyond the U.S. - A19 chip limitation
The A19 in iPhone 17e has a 4-core GPU, while the standard iPhone 17 carries a 5-core GPU. This results in slightly lower graphics performance in demanding games. However, it matches the 4-core GPU found in iPhone 16e, so it is not a downgrade for existing users. - New Soft Pink color
Apple adds a Soft Pink finish with a premium matte texture, giving buyers a fresh option beyond the usual Black and White. - Same battery capacity
The battery remains at 4,005 mAh, identical to iPhone 16e. Appleâs advertised battery life figures also remain the same. - Next-generation portrait support
The camera recognizes people, dogs, and cats, and automatically saves depth data. You can apply background blur after taking the shot and adjust the focus point later in the Photos app.
Apple has not confirmed the RAM yet, but it is likely 8GB, in line with iPhone 16e and the regular iPhone 17.
iPhone 17e starts at $599 in the U.S. with 256GB of storage. Pre-orders begin March 4 at 6:15 a.m. Pacific Time, and availability starts March 11.
