iPhone 18 Pro Carbon Figures: One Storage Step Costs More Than Moving Up to the Pro Max

Apple gives every iPhone 18 Pro configuration its own carbon figure, and read side by side they say something the price list does not: choosing more storage adds more emissions than choosing the bigger phone. A storage step adds 9 kg of CO2e on the 6.3-inch Pro, while moving to the 6.9-inch Pro Max at the same capacity adds 5 kg to 7 kg.

The numbers sit in Apple’s Product Environmental Report for the two phones, a PDF dated to the September 9 introduction. They appear on no product page, no store page and nowhere in the press release.

The storage step beats the size step every time

One consequence is worth stating plainly. A 512GB iPhone 18 Pro at 72 kg carries a higher figure than a 256GB iPhone 18 Pro Max at 69 kg, so a buyer weighing the 6.3-inch against the 6.9-inch model on environmental grounds is looking at the wrong choice. The capacity decides it.

The 2TB step is where it stops being incremental

The first two storage steps cost 9 kg each. The third costs 28 kg, roughly three times as much, which is what takes a 2TB iPhone 18 Pro to 109 kg against 63 kg at 256GB.

For scale, Apple attributes 13 kg of the 256GB phone’s total to customer product use, meaning all the electricity it expects you to put into the phone over its life. Choosing 2TB over 1TB adds more than double that in one click at checkout, and it adds $600 at the same time, as our price breakdown sets out.

Apple breaks down one configuration out of eight

Only the 256GB iPhone 18 Pro gets a lifecycle split in the report. Its 63 kg divides as follows.

  • Production 46 kg, of which 29 kg is electricity and 17 kg is everything else
  • Renewable energy infrastructure 1 kg
  • Transportation 3 kg
  • Customer product use 13 kg
  • End-of-life processing under 1 kg

The other seven configurations get a single total each. Apple does not say which of those five lines carries the extra 46 kg that separates the 256GB Pro from the 2TB Pro, and it does not publish a component-level figure for storage anywhere in the report.

The same report carries Apple’s recycled-content claims for the phones: 40 percent recycled content overall, an 85 percent recycled aluminum enclosure, 100 percent recycled cobalt in the battery, and manufacturing electricity that is 50 percent renewable. Those are the figures Apple did put in the launch announcement.

Apple also changed its own model this year

The report states that in fiscal year 2026 Apple is implementing lifecycle assessment model updates in two areas, display panels and system on chip, and gives new average carbon intensities of 0.16 kg CO2e per square centimeter for OLED and 0.03 for LCD. Both areas are central to this phone, whose OLED panel and 2-nanometer A20 Pro chip are new this year.

That matters for anyone lining these figures up against last year’s phone. The method behind the numbers moved in the same year the numbers did, so a year-over-year comparison is not necessarily like for like, and Apple does not quantify the effect of the change.

What Apple has not said

  • Where the per-capacity difference comes from. No component-level explanation appears in the report.
  • How much the FY2026 model change moves these totals, up or down.
  • Any carbon-neutral designation for iPhone 18 Pro or iPhone 18 Pro Max. The claim that has accompanied some Apple Watch models does not appear here.
  • Lifecycle splits for the 512GB, 1TB and 2TB configurations of either phone.
  • Anything about these figures on a page a shopper would see. They exist only in the PDF.
