The Pro Max carries the same $100 gap one tier up: $1,299 connected, $1,399 unlocked. Apple’s checkout presents four connectivity choices at the top of the page, AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon or “Connect on your own later,” and the price changes the moment one is picked. What the checkout screen does not say is what picking a carrier actually obligates a buyer to.

Apple’s own footnote explains the contradiction
Apple’s footnote on Apple Card Monthly Installments states it plainly: buying with ACMI “requires users to select AT&T, T-Mobile, or Verizon as their carrier when they check out,” and in the same sentence, “an iPhone purchased with ACMI is always unlocked, so they can switch carriers at any time, subject to their carrier’s terms.” A carrier selection is a condition of the financing and the connectivity price, not a service contract. The Apple Upgrade lease carries the identical requirement: its terms state the lease “requires selection of an eligible carrier,” even though the device it delivers is the same unlocked hardware.

Two decisions people get backward
The first mistake is assuming that selecting a carrier at checkout locks the phone to that carrier the way a subsidized contract once did. On Apple’s own terms for ACMI purchases, it does not. The second mistake runs the other way: choosing “Connect on your own later” in the belief that it is the neutral, commitment-free option, without registering that it costs $100 more and, per Apple’s financing footnotes, forecloses Apple Card Monthly Installments entirely, since ACMI is not offered without a carrier selection at checkout.
Apple’s $30 connectivity discount, which does carry a named figure, applies only to iPhone 17 and iPhone 16. There is no published connectivity-discount amount for iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max or iPhone Duo, which is why the $100 gap on the new models has to be worked out from the two prices rather than read off a footnote. The A20 Pro chip and camera system described in Apple’s tech specs are identical whichever connectivity path is chosen, so the $100 buys nothing about the phone itself.
What the carriers themselves have published
The carrier side of this decision is thinner than the price side. AT&T’s and Verizon’s own sites carry no iPhone 18 Pro trade-in or credit terms as of this writing; the $350, $930 and $1,200 credit tiers that circulate for AT&T exist only in Apple’s own footnotes on the iPhone 18 Pro Store page, not on AT&T’s site. T-Mobile’s terms could not be confirmed directly. Selecting a carrier at checkout today does not yet mean selecting a confirmed, published offer from that carrier.
What has not been confirmed
Apple has not published what happens if a buyer selects a carrier at checkout for the $1,199 price and then never activates service with that carrier. It has also not published carrier-specific credit terms for AT&T, T-Mobile or Verizon beyond the footnote figures on its own Store page. Community reports about individual carrier plan tiers are not confirmed and are not used here.
