Apple’s Product Environmental Report for iPhone 18 Pro states that every final assembly site is certified Zero Waste to Landfill, that half of manufacturing electricity comes from renewable sources, and that the packaging is entirely fiber-based. None of those three figures appears on iPhone 18 Pro’s product page, its September 9 announcement, or its tech specs.
They sit instead in a PDF dated September 9, 2026, alongside a fourth detail worth flagging on its own: Apple changed part of its carbon-accounting method for this fiscal year, which means some of this report’s figures may not line up cleanly with next year’s.

Zero Waste to Landfill: what the certification actually requires
Apple’s report states plainly that “all final assembly supplier sites ⦠are Zero Waste to Landfill,” verified as Zero Waste by UL LLC under the UL 2799 Standard. UL’s own bar for that certification is at least 90 percent diversion from landfill through methods other than waste-to-energy incineration. Apple applies the claim to the sites that assemble iPhone 18 Pro, not to every supplier in its chain further upstream.

Half the electricity, all of the packaging
Apple states that 50 percent of the electricity used to manufacture iPhone 18 Pro comes from renewable sources, and that its packaging is 100 percent fiber-based, using only recycled or responsibly sourced fibers. Both figures are higher than what Apple states for AirPods 5, whose own environmental page lists 35 percent renewable electricity alongside its separate 40 percent recycled-material figure.
Why Apple’s own carbon math might not compare cleanly next year
The report contains a methodology note that rarely gets quoted: “In Fiscal Year 2026, Apple is implementing LCA model updates in two areas: display panels and system on chip.” That second area covers the same A20 Pro chip Apple otherwise markets on performance and efficiency. The new average carbon intensity Apple assigns is 0.16 kg CO2e per square centimeter for OLED displays and 0.03 kg CO2e per square centimeter for LCD displays. A change to the underlying model in the same year the model produces its headline numbers is worth noting on its own: it means a year-over-year comparison against iPhone 17 Pro‘s report may not be measuring the display and chip the same way twice.
The report also breaks its 63 kg CO2e figure for the 256GB iPhone 18 Pro down by lifecycle stage, a different cut than the storage-tier comparisons Apple’s own table invites elsewhere. Manufacturing dominates: production accounts for 46 kg, split between 17 kg from non-electricity sources and 29 kg from electricity. A further 1 kg comes from building the renewable-energy infrastructure behind that electricity.

Transportation adds 3 kg, and Apple’s estimate for customer use across the product’s life is 13 kg, well under a quarter of the manufacturing share. End-of-life processing is under 1 kg. The arithmetic points back to the same 50 percent renewable-electricity figure above: manufacturing electricity alone accounts for close to half of the phone’s entire published footprint before it ever reaches a customer. iPhone Duo‘s own report, published the same day, uses the same lifecycle categories, though Apple has not published a comparable per-configuration total for that device yet.
What the report stops short of
Nowhere in the material Apple has published, including this report, does Apple state that iPhone 18 Pro or iPhone 18 Pro Max is carbon neutral, a label that has accompanied some past Apple Watch models. The report separately states that iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max carry Ceramic Shield 2, described as “3x better scratch resistance than the previous generation of Ceramic Shield,” a durability claim that sits in the same document as the manufacturing figures above rather than on the specs page most readers would check first.
What Apple has not said
Apple has not published a repair price, a Self Service Repair manual entry, or a per-supplier breakdown behind the Zero Waste to Landfill claim, and it has not stated whether the FY26 accounting change moves iPhone 18 Pro’s reported footprint up or down relative to how iPhone 17 Pro would score under the same new model. iPhone 18 Pro reaches stores Friday, September 18; nothing in Apple’s public pages to date suggests any of this will move from the PDF to the product page before then.
