iPhone 18 Pro Telephoto: 12 Things Apple Has Not Published About the Zoom

Apple has published five numbers about the iPhone 18 Pro telephoto: 48MP, 100 mm, f/2.8, a tetraprism and 3D sensor-shift stabilization. Around that short line sit twelve things it has not published, and several of them are the figures a buyer would need to judge the 8x claim.

This is a list of absences rather than a complaint. Apple’s tech specs are unusually specific about the rest of this phone, down to 8.75 mm of thickness and an IP68 rating to 6 meters for 30 minutes, which makes the gaps around the longest lens easier to see. Our camera explainer covers what is published.

The hardware figures that are missing

Apple gives a 2.44 micron quad-pixel figure for the main camera on its overview page and no equivalent for the telephoto, so neither the sensor size nor the pixel size of the long lens appears anywhere. Without them, the step from a 48MP lens to a 12MP step at 200 mm cannot be checked against anything.

The 100 mm figure is a full-frame equivalent, not the true focal length of the assembly, which Apple has never printed for any iPhone. The tetraprism is named and not described, and the 3D in 3D sensor-shift arrives without a compensation figure in degrees, stops or any other unit.

The capture questions Apple leaves open

Apple lists super-high-resolution photos at 24MP and 48MP, ProRAW, Night mode, Portrait Lighting with six effects and next-generation portraits with Focus and Depth Control. It does not say which of those reach the 48 mm and 200 mm steps, and the two step entries carry a flat 12MP with no conditions attached.

There is no minimum focus distance for the telephoto either, and no macro figure anywhere in the iPhone 18 Pro camera list, while the iPhone Duo spec sheet names a 48MP macro on its 13 mm lens. Apple has published nothing that explains the difference.

Video and zoom are documented separately

The video list is long: 4K Dolby Vision at 24, 25, 30, 60, 100 or 120 fps, Cinematic mode up to 4K Dolby Vision at 60 fps, ProRes up to 4K at 120 fps with external recording, Apple Log 2, Genlock and spatial video at 1080p 30 fps. None of those lines carries a zoom figure.

So the maximum zoom while recording, in any format, is not published, and neither is whether the 40x still ceiling applies to video. Apple also makes no claim about what the telephoto contributes to Cinematic mode or to the 1080p spatial format.

The twelve absences in one list

What is missingWhy it matters
Telephoto sensor sizeSets the context for the 12MP step at 200 mm
Telephoto pixel sizePublished for the main camera, not for this one
True focal lengthThe 100 mm figure is an equivalent, not a measurement
Tetraprism detailNamed, never described
Stabilization figure3D sensor-shift arrives with no unit attached
Minimum focus distanceDecides how close the 100 mm lens can work
Macro supportListed for iPhone Duo, absent for iPhone 18 Pro
ProRAW and 48MP at crop stepsDecides what files 48 mm and 200 mm produce
Night mode by stepPublished as a feature, never per focal length
Maximum zoom in videoAbsent from every recording format line
Resolution past 8xNothing between 12MP and the 40x ceiling
Any change from iPhone 17 ProThe lens line reads the same, with no upgrade claim

The last row is the one to sit with. The published telephoto line on iPhone 17 Pro is the same 100 mm f/2.8 part with the same 8x optical-quality claim, and Apple has announced no telephoto change this year. The camera news this year is the variable aperture on the 24 mm main, which is a different lens entirely.

What Apple has not said

Apple has not said whether any of these figures will appear later, and its product pages have carried the same short telephoto line since the spec sheet went up on September 9. Environmental figures for this phone appear only in a separate PDF, so a fuller camera description arriving in a support document at some later date cannot be ruled out either way.

No reviewer has used this camera, so nothing here describes what any lens or step produces. Pre-orders open at 5 a.m. PT on Saturday, September 12, which is 12:00 UTC, the phones reach stores on Friday, September 18, and iOS 27 arrives free on Monday, September 14.
