The credit and the device travel on separate schedules
Apple’s own description treats the estimate and the physical device as two separate steps. The credit lands against the new purchase the moment the trade-in questions are answered at checkout, today if the order is placed today. The device itself is a later step: Apple receives it and verifies its condition afterward, and only then is the estimate confirmed. Nothing in Apple’s own wording requires the old phone to be handed over before the new one exists.

Between now and September 18, the old phone still has a job
For six days, the phone being traded in is also the only phone available. Calls, messages, two-factor codes and everyday apps all still run on it, and nothing about placing a pre-order changes that. There is no published reason to erase, deactivate or otherwise disable the device before the replacement is in hand. The same is true regardless of which of the three trade-in routes was chosen at checkout, since none of them require the old device to be surrendered before the new one arrives.

Why the order matters more than the calendar
The practical sequence Apple’s own process implies is: order and answer the trade-in questions first, keep the current iPhone running until the new one is in hand, then hand over the old device once it is no longer needed. Doing it in a different order, such as disabling the old phone before the new one has arrived, is not something Apple’s trade-in wording asks for and would leave someone without a working iPhone for part of the six-day gap between this weekend’s pre-order and delivery.
What has not been confirmed
Apple has not published a specific number of days for how long a customer has to send in the traded-in device once the new one arrives, a checklist of steps to take before shipping it, or what happens if the device is sent later than Apple expects. It has not stated whether the six-day gap between order and delivery differs by country, and none of the sources checked for this article describe a required action before September 18. It also has not said whether a carrier trade-in or a private sale follows a different sequence than Apple’s own route, so anyone using either of those two should not assume Apple’s timing applies to them as well.
