It matters because the two halves are what produce the headline figure. Apple describes the result as a 16x optical-quality zoom range, and that range is the span from the 13 mm ultra wide to the 200 mm step at the other end. Why this is the only step Apple calls plain optical
Apple attaches the word optical, with no qualifier, to the outward step alone. The reason is simple enough: going out means switching to a lens that physically exists at 13 mm, so there is nothing to qualify.

Going in, the phrase becomes optical-quality, because the 48 mm and 200 mm steps are listed at 12MP and are read out of the 24 mm main and the 100 mm telephoto rather than from lenses at those focal lengths. One word separates a lens from a crop across Apple’s whole summary.
Apple lists the ultra wide at 13 mm and the main at 24 mm, and calls the step 2x. It does not publish how it rounds that figure, so the 2x is Apple’s description rather than a ratio of the two numbers it prints.

The two ends of that table are the whole 16x claim. Digital zoom runs above it to a published ceiling of 40x, and Apple does not use the optical-quality phrase for any of that.
The lens that did not get the new aperture
The variable aperture is the camera news this year, and it reaches one lens. The 24 mm main moves between f/1.48, f/1.8, f/2.8 and f/4.0 on six laser-cut blades. The ultra wide stays at a fixed f/2.2 and the telephoto at a fixed f/2.8.
So the wide end of the zoom range is unchanged in every published respect, and Apple has made no claim of any kind about it this year. The Pro and Pro Max sheets are identical here, and the 18MP Center Stage front camera at f/1.9 sits outside the zoom range entirely.

Five of Apple’s current and recent models carry the same 48MP ultra wide at the same 13 mm and the same f/2.2, and their range claims differ by a factor of four. The variable is the telephoto end, not the wide end, which is why the iPhone Duo cameras stop at a 4x range despite matching the iPhone 18 Pro exactly at 13 mm.
What Apple has not said
- Whether the 13 mm lens supports a macro mode on iPhone 18 Pro, which Apple lists explicitly as a 48MP macro for iPhone Duo.
- Sensor size or pixel size for the ultra wide, published for neither this lens nor the telephoto.
- How the 2x figure for the outward step is derived from 13 mm and 24 mm.
- Whether anything about the ultra wide changed this year, since Apple has made no claim about it either way.
- Any field of view figure for the other four steps, published only as 120 degrees at the wide end.
