Three of the five zoom steps Apple lists for iPhone 18 Pro are 48MP. The other two are the 2x at 48 mm and the 8x at 200 mm, and Apple’s tech specs put both of them at 12MP, a quarter of the resolution of the lenses they are taken from.
Apple’s spec sheet describes three rear lenses and then two extra entries. The lenses are a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide at 13 mm and f/2.2, a 48MP Fusion main at 24 mm with the new variable aperture, and a 48MP Fusion Telephoto at 100 mm and f/2.8 with a tetraprism and 3D sensor-shift stabilization. The two steps where the megapixels fall
The 48 mm step is drawn from the 24 mm main camera and the 200 mm step from the 100 mm telephoto. Both land at 12MP, and Apple states the figure rather than hiding it: the words 12MP appear in the name of each entry.

Apple publishes a 2.44 micron quad-pixel figure for the main camera on its overview page and nothing equivalent for the telephoto, so the sensor detail that would explain the step down is available for one lens and not for the other. The A20 Pro and its dual 16-core Neural Engine do the processing behind every step, and Apple has published no per-step processing claim at all.
Why a 4x lens carries an 8x claim
Apple’s own label for the long lens is 48MP Fusion Telephoto (4x) at 100 mm. The 8x in the marketing summary is the second entry at 200 mm, which the specs list at 12MP, so the headline zoom number on this phone belongs to a step with a quarter of the pixels of the lens it comes from.
That is also why the phrase is 8x optical-quality zoom rather than 8x optical zoom. Apple reserves plain optical for the 2x step outward to the 13 mm ultra wide, which is a lens.
Apple’s 12MP zoom steps are not new, but their source changed

Read down the table and the change is clear. Through iPhone 16 Pro, the longest step Apple advertised was a 12MP lens. From iPhone 17 Pro onward the longest lens became a 48MP part and the longest advertised step became a 12MP reading of it, which is how the claimed figure grew from 5x to 8x without a longer lens.
What the 12MP steps mean for the files you keep
Apple lists super-high-resolution photos at 24MP and 48MP for this camera, plus ProRAW, and it does not say which zoom steps those settings reach. The two crop steps are given as 12MP with no qualifier, and the 18MP front camera is a separate line again.
Apple publishes no file sizes for any of these formats, so the storage arithmetic that would follow from shooting at one step or another cannot be done from Apple’s numbers.
What Apple has not said
- Whether ProRAW, 24MP or 48MP capture is available at the 48 mm and 200 mm steps.
- The telephoto sensor size or pixel size, the two figures that would put the 12MP entry in context.
- Any resolution figure for digital zoom between 8x and the published 40x ceiling.
- Whether the step down to 12MP applies in every mode, including Night mode and Portrait captures.
- File sizes for any photo format on the new camera.
