Two products Apple announced on September 9 are described with a titanium grade: the iPhone Duo, whose frame and hinge cover are Grade 5 titanium with a mirror-polished finish, and the Apple Watch Ultra 4, whose 49 mm case is Grade 5 titanium. Every other titanium part in the 2026 lineup is called titanium and left ungraded.
The two uses could hardly be less alike. One is a 254-gram phone that folds in half, the other a 63-gram watch case rated for diving, and Apple attaches different recycled-titanium claims to each.

What Apple publishes about the alloy, which is the name and nothing else
Grade 5 in Apple’s materials is a designation, not a data sheet. Apple publishes no composition, no hardness, no tensile figure and no thickness for any titanium part on either product.

It also makes no comparative durability claim for the metal. Where Apple does give a toughness multiple this year it is about glass, crediting Ceramic Shield 2 on the Duo’s outer display with three times better scratch resistance and the Ceramic Shield 2 crystal on aluminum Apple Watch Series 12 models with being 60 percent tougher than Ion-X.
That gap is worth holding onto. A grade tells you which alloy family Apple specified, and it does not tell you how a frame or a case will behave when dropped, which Apple has never quantified for any product.
iPhone Duo: a frame, a hinge cover and two different recycled figures
On the iPhone Duo, Apple applies Grade 5 titanium to the frame and the hinge cover, then splits the recycled claim between them. The enclosure is 85 percent recycled titanium and the hinge cover is 100 percent.
The hinge cover is also the only part in the lineup Apple says is 3D printed, and the process matters to the claim: printing lets Apple form the cover from recycled feedstock. The hinge it covers is made of more than 100 components with custom adhesives for flex relief.
Titanium is not the only metal listed on this phone. Apple’s environment lines also credit a 100 percent recycled aluminum frame, which means the word frame appears against both metals without a part-by-part map.
Apple Watch Ultra 4: a 49 mm case at 63 grams
The Apple Watch Ultra 4 case is a single piece of Grade 5 titanium, 49 mm by 44 mm by 12 mm, in natural or black. Apple lists it at 63.0 grams in natural and 63.1 grams in black, about 1.4 grams heavier than the Ultra 3.
Here the titanium carries the ratings. Apple states water resistance to 100 meters under ISO 22810, recreational diving to 40 meters under EN13319, IP6X dust protection and MIL-STD 810H testing, none of which the Duo’s titanium is asked to do.

The titanium Apple does not grade
Apple Watch Series 12 offers a titanium case in radiant gold and natural, and Apple describes it as 100 percent recycled titanium without naming a grade. The Hermes edition of Series 12 uses the same radiant gold titanium finish.
The iPhone Air is also a titanium phone in Apple’s current lineup with no grade published. The clearest omission is the iPhone 18 Pro, which has no titanium at all this year and is described as an aluminum unibody with 85 percent recycled aluminum in the enclosure.
What Apple has not said
Apple has published no alloy composition, no hardness or tensile figures, no drop-test data and no grade for the titanium in Apple Watch Series 12 or iPhone Air. It has also published no repair pricing for any product in our event recap, so the cost of damaging a titanium part is unknown.
