Apple publishes three brightness figures for the iPhone Duo: 1000 nits typical, 1600 nits peak for HDR content and 3000 nits peak outdoor. Only the first describes what you see in ordinary indoor use, and the 3000 nits headline number applies to peak outdoor conditions rather than to the whole screen all the time.
The same three numbers appear on the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max spec sheets, so the iPhone Duo does not trade brightness for folding. What changes is the surface those nits pass through, because the 7.6-inch inner display carries a nano-texture matte finish.

Why three numbers instead of one
The figures are not alternatives, they describe different jobs. Typical brightness is the ceiling for regular content such as a web page or an app, HDR peak is reached by parts of an image that carry HDR highlight data, and outdoor peak is a short-term maximum the display can hit in strong daylight.

That is why a 3000-nit phone does not look three times brighter than a 1000-nit one indoors. The number you live with is 1000 nits, and it is identical across Apple’s current premium iPhones.
Apple does not publish how long either Duo display can hold its peak, what temperature it holds it at, or what the minimum brightness is. The last figure matters at night and Apple omits it for both panels, even though it publishes a 1 nit minimum for the Apple Watch Series 12 announced at the same Surprise and shine event.
The nano-texture finish changes what reaches your eye
Apple gives the inner display a nano-texture finish and describes it as a premium matte surface that “reduces glare and reflections, creating a matte surface that minimizes crease visibility and feels great to touch.”
That is a claim about reflected light, not emitted light. Glare reduction and peak brightness are two different routes to a readable screen outdoors, and Apple publishes a number for one of them and a description for the other.
Both displays also carry an anti-reflective coating, and the inner display adds an Apple-designed scratch-resistant coating over its custom polymer and glass stack. Apple attaches no reflectance percentage to any of it.
How the Duo compares with the rest of the lineup
Apple’s comparison pages put the Duo level with the newest slab iPhones on all three figures, and ahead of the iPhone 16 Pro on outdoor peak.

So brightness is not a reason to choose between the Duo and the iPhone 18 Pro lineup, and it is not a compromise Apple made to get a folding panel into a 5.2 mm body. Size, pixel density and price are where the two iPhone Duo and iPhone 18 Pro Max spec sheets genuinely diverge.
The one figure Apple lists against a single display
Apple’s 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio appears in the inner display listing and is not repeated for the outer display. The rest of the optical specifications, including True Tone, the P3 wide color gamut, HDR support and Haptic Touch, are listed for both.
Whether that omission is meaningful or simply a shorter spec entry is not something Apple explains, and it is worth reading as an absence rather than a difference until Apple says otherwise.
What Apple has not said
Apple has published no minimum brightness, no sustained brightness figure, no measurement conditions for any of the three peaks, and no reflectance figure for the nano-texture finish or the anti-reflective coating. It has also published no contrast ratio for the outer display.
