The strongest argument against buying a first-generation product is usually the roadmap, and the iPhone Duo has one. Apple has dated Apple Pencil support to later in 2026, the developer tools for the fold to later this month, and five more Siri AI languages to October, which means the phone that arrives on October 23 is not the phone Apple has described.
So the useful test for a $1,999 purchase is narrow: does the fold earn the money on the strength of what is finished on launch day. Everything below is Apple’s own published timing, taken from the announcements Apple made on September 9.
Key facts: what ships on October 23, and what does not
| Feature | Apple’s published timing |
|---|---|
| The hardware, in full | October 23, in more than 70 countries and regions |
| Split View, StandBy, posable layouts, redesigned Dynamic Island, Call Context | October 23, on iOS 27.1 |
| Smart Take, Duo Preview, Kid Cue, Duo FaceTime, Dual Capture | October 23 |
| Touch ID in the side button, dual eSIM, satellite features free for two years | October 23 |
| Siri AI beta, in English | October 23, with the same beta label as every other iPhone |
| French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish Siri AI | October, per Apple, with no date |
| Apple Pencil (USB-C) on both displays | Later in 2026 |
| Xcode 27.1 beta and the Duo development kit | Later this month |
Apple Pencil is a 2026 promise, not an October feature
Apple’s press release says the Apple Pencil (USB-C) works on both displays and that support arrives later in 2026. There is no date, no software version attached to it, and no description of what it will do beyond working on both screens.

If a 7.6-inch folding display plus a pencil is the reason the Duo appeals to you, that combination is not what you will be buying on October 23. It is the clearest example of a feature that belongs in next year’s purchase decision rather than this year’s.
The software it ships on has not been released
The Duo ships with iOS 27.1, not the iOS 27 that arrives on Monday, September 14 for every other supported iPhone. Apple has not dated iOS 27.1, published release notes for it, or said whether other iPhones receive it alongside the fold.
The developer picture is on the same clock. Apple’s Human Interface Guidelines for the Duo are live, while the Xcode 27.1 beta carrying the software development kit and the page on preparing an app for the fold are both marked as coming later this month. Apple’s own features will work on day one. How the apps you use behave across two displays is not something anyone can promise yet.
Siri AI on a $1,999 phone is a beta with limits
Siri AI ships in beta in English, with French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish following in October, and Apple Intelligence covers 16 languages, counting Simplified and Traditional Chinese separately. Two footnotes matter more than the feature list.
- Apple states that features relying on server-side models, including Siri AI, Image Playground and the intelligent photo editing tools, are subject to daily usage limits, and that expanded access will be available for a fee in the future. No price and no date.
- Apple states that Siri AI will not be available initially in the EU on iOS, iPadOS and watchOS, and that features relying on it are also unavailable there. An EU buyer paying October 23 prices does not get it on day one.
- Apple also notes Siri AI is not available to users under 13, and its Apple Reference Image regional footnote names iPhone 18 Pro models without addressing the Duo.
Buy the phone that ships
The honest position on a first-generation fold is not that the roadmap is empty. It is that the roadmap is undated, and the hardware is not. What the Duo does on October 23 is already a large amount: two displays, the A20 Pro, a 48MP Dual Fusion camera system and software written for a fold, as our full iPhone Duo specification sets out. Price that. Our Duo against iPhone 18 Pro Max comparison is the other half of the decision.
What has not been confirmed
Apple has not dated Apple Pencil support beyond later in 2026, has not dated iOS 27.1 or the Xcode 27.1 beta beyond later this month, and has published no country list for the October 30 wave. It has published no price or date for expanded Apple Intelligence access, no timetable for Siri AI in the EU, no fold-cycle rating, no repair price and no per-device AppleCare+ price.
iOS 27 arrives Monday, September 14. iPhone Duo pre-orders open Friday, October 16 at 5 a.m. PT, the phone ships Friday, October 23, and 28 further countries and regions follow on Friday, October 30.
