What Apple has confirmed about the hinge
Apple’s press release describes the hinge cover as 3D-printed from 100 percent recycled titanium, mounted on a Grade 5 titanium frame with a mirror-polished finish. The same release states the hinge carries more than 100 components, bonded in part with custom adhesives Apple built specifically for flex relief, the give a folding joint needs so it does not crack under repeated motion. Apple’s product page adds that the whole enclosure, hinge included, carries an IP68 rating to a depth of 6 meters for up to 30 minutes, the same figure Apple publishes for its sealed, non-folding iPhones.

Why a part count is a repair question, not only a durability one
A figure like “more than 100 components” reads as a durability claim, and Apple presents it that way: more parts, more engineering, more confidence in the joint. But a component count is also the plainest signal available for what a repair would look like. A hinge built from over 100 pieces, bonded with adhesives designed for flex rather than fastened with screws, is not a part a person removes and swaps on a kitchen table. It reads as a sealed, engineered assembly, closer in spirit to how Apple has always treated a logic board than to a battery or a screen. Apple has not said what happens to that assembly once one fails outside warranty, on iPhone Duo or on any future version of it.
What Apple has not priced
Apple has not published a repair price for the hinge, for the folding inner display beneath it, or for the outer display. It has not said whether iPhone Duo will appear in its Self Service Repair store, and it has not published a per-device AppleCare+ price for iPhone Duo at all, a gap that covers every part of the phone, not only the hinge. The only cost figures Apple has published for iPhone Duo are its four storage prices, from $1,999 for 256GB to $3,199 for 2TB, plus $79 for Apple’s own case and $129 for its Folio.
Apple volunteered the hinge’s component count and its recycled-titanium construction in the same release that gives the enclosure’s other environmental figures: 85 percent recycled titanium overall, 35 percent recycled content across the device. Precise figures like these function as confidence signals for a first-generation folding iPhone, set against the sealed aluminum unibody of the iPhone 18 Pro Max. None of those figures answers what happens years into ownership, and Apple has chosen, so far, not to put a number on that either.
