iPhone Duo Carries the Same IP68 Rating as a Sealed iPhone 18 Pro: 6 Meters, 30 Minutes, One Moving Hinge

Apple rates the iPhone Duo at IP68, to a maximum depth of 6 meters for up to 30 minutes, which is the same rating and the same stated conditions as the sealed iPhone 18 Pro. A phone with a moving hinge and two display panels carries the identical published figure to a phone with neither.

That parity is the most concrete durability statement Apple has made about the iPhone Duo, and it is also the narrowest. The rating covers immersion under stated conditions and says nothing at all about the hinge as a mechanism.

The same rating on a phone that opens and closes

Apple does not present the Duo’s rating as a lesser version of the one on its slab phones. The figure, the depth and the duration match the iPhone 18 Pro line exactly.

What Apple publishes around the hinge is construction rather than sealing: more than 100 components, custom adhesives for flex relief, and a cover 3D printed from 100 percent recycled titanium. No gasket, seal or ingress-specific hinge detail appears anywhere in its materials.

So the rating is the only sealing claim on the record. Apple has not said whether the hinge region is tested differently, or whether the rating assumes the phone is open or closed during immersion.

What the 6 and the 8 stand for

An IP code carries two digits, and they describe different tests. The first digit is solids, where 6 is the top mark and means dust-tight, and the second is liquids, where 8 covers continuous immersion at conditions the manufacturer states.

That second digit is why Apple prints 6 meters and 30 minutes at all. Under IEC 60529 an 8 is only meaningful with the maker’s own depth and duration attached, so those two numbers are part of the rating rather than an extra promise.

It also means the figure is a laboratory result, not a warranty. Apple sets out what it covers and does not cover under its own terms, and it has published no water-damage guidance specific to a folding iPhone.

Dust is the digit nobody quotes

The 6 in IP68 is arguably the more interesting half on a folding phone, because it is the dust-tight mark and a hinge is the one part of a phone that opens a path inward. Apple claims the top solids rating and leaves it there.

There is no separate sand, grit or particulate statement, no advice about beaches or workshops, and no note about opening the phone in a dusty environment. The rating is the whole claim.

Where Apple’s other September 2026 products land

Ratings across the lineup are not interchangeable, because the two Apple Watch models are rated to a swimming standard as well as an IP code. Water resistance to 50 or 100 meters under ISO 22810 is a different test from IP68 immersion and the numbers should not be read as a ladder.

Apple Watch Ultra 4IP6X dust100 meters, ISO 22810, plus EN13319 to 40 meters

The Apple Watch Ultra 4 is the only product in the group Apple describes for recreational diving, at 40 meters under EN13319, and it also adds MIL-STD 810H testing. The AirPods 5 figure, IP57, is the lowest of the six and comes with no depth statement at all.

What Apple has not said

Apple has published no fold-cycle rating, no hinge sealing description, no dust-ingress statement beyond the IP digit, and no repair pricing for water or dust damage on any product in our event recap. It has not said whether the rating was established with the phone open, closed or both.

Nobody outside Apple has handled an iPhone Duo, so the rating cannot be checked independently yet. Pre-orders open Friday, October 16 at 5 a.m. PT, with availability from Friday, October 23 in more than 70 countries and regions and 28 more on Friday, October 30.
