iPhone Duo’s Rear Cameras Read Like the iPhone 17’s, Not the iPhone 18 Pro’s

Line up Apple’s spec pages for its 2026 iPhones and the iPhone Duo’s rear cameras do not sit next to the iPhone 18 Pro’s. They sit next to the iPhone 17’s: a 48MP main camera at 26 mm and f/1.6, a 48MP Ultra Wide at 13 mm and f/2.2, and a 12MP 2x crop at 52 mm and f/1.6, with optical steps of 0.5x, 1x and 2x on both phones.

The iPhone 18 Pro is the model that breaks the pattern, with a third lens, a different main focal length and a variable aperture. The Duo costs $1,999 to start and the iPhone 17 is listed from $899, so the same two focal lengths appear at both ends of Apple’s iPhone range.

Three lines that match the iPhone 17 exactly

Apple’s tech specs give the Duo’s main camera as a 48MP Fusion sensor at 26 mm and f/1.6 with sensor-shift stabilization, its Ultra Wide as 48MP at 13 mm and f/2.2 with a 120-degree field of view, and its 2x setting as a 12MP crop of the main sensor at 52 mm. Those are the iPhone 17’s three numbers as well.

It is the same story on zoom range. Apple lists 0.5x, 1x and 2x optical steps for both, a 4x optical zoom range for the Duo, and digital zoom to 10x. The iPhone 17 was $799 at launch and Apple raised it by $100 on September 9, which puts $1,070 between an iPhone 17 at 256GB and a 256GB iPhone Duo carrying the same two focal lengths.

Where the Duo does pull away from the standard iPhone

The lenses match. What Apple lists around them does not.

CapabilityWhat Apple lists for iPhone Duo
Video ceiling4K Dolby Vision at up to 120 fps. Apple’s iPhone 17 video list tops out at 60 fps
Slow motion4K at 120 fps and 1080p at 240 fps
Dual CaptureFront and rear video at once, 4K at 30 fps
Action modeUp to 2.8K at 60 fps
Rear Center StageCenter Stage on the rear camera, plus Duo Preview on the cover display
Macro48MP macro on the Ultra Wide
ShutterZero shutter lag on the 48MP Fusion Main
OffloadingUSB-C with USB 3 at up to 10 Gb/s, against USB 2 at 480 Mb/s on iPhone 17

Apple also gives the Duo a Camera Control button with a Siri Camera mode, Photographic Styles 3, and four fold-only features: Smart Take, Duo Preview, Kid Cue and Duo FaceTime. Where a row is absent from the iPhone 17 sheet rather than contradicted, treat it as unpublished.

What the Pro’s third lens adds

The gap between the Duo and the iPhone 18 Pro camera system is the part Apple does not narrow. The Pro adds a 48MP Fusion Telephoto at 100 mm and f/2.8 with a tetraprism and 3D sensor-shift stabilization, optical-quality crops Apple lists as 12MP at 48 mm and 12MP at 200 mm, an 8x optical-quality setting, a 16x optical-quality range and digital zoom to 40x. Its main camera is 24 mm with four aperture stops at f/1.48, f/1.8, f/2.8 and f/4.

Against that, the Duo’s longest published reach is a 12MP 2x crop, and its digital ceiling is 10x.

The front camera is where the Duo sits below the whole lineup

Apple puts an 18MP Center Stage camera at f/1.9 on the iPhone 18 Pro, the iPhone 18 Pro Max, the iPhone 17 and the iPhone Air. The Duo uses that camera in neither position. Its cover camera is 12MP at f/2.2, recording 4K Dolby Vision at up to 60 fps, and the inner camera sits under the folding display at f/1.8 and records 1080p at 30 or 60 fps.

So the highest-priced iPhone Apple sells is also the only new one whose front camera is listed at 12MP, and the only one where video from the selfie camera on the big screen stops at 1080p.

What Apple has not said

Apple’s published Duo video list does not mention ProRes, Apple Log 2 or Genlock, all of which appear on the iPhone 18 Pro sheet, and Apple has not said whether the Duo supports them. It has published no image-quality comparison between the Duo and any other iPhone, no sensor sizes, and no digital zoom figure for the iPhone 17. Nobody outside Apple has used an iPhone Duo, so none of this has been tested.

iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max pre-orders are due to open today, Saturday, September 12 at 5 a.m. PT, ahead of a September 18 release. iPhone Duo pre-orders open on Friday, October 16 and it ships on Friday, October 23.
