Apple calls the iPhone Duo a titanium foldable design, with a Grade 5 titanium frame and hinge cover in a mirror-polished finish. Its own environment figures for the same phone credit an 85 percent recycled titanium enclosure and, separately, a 100 percent recycled aluminum frame, and Apple never says which structural part each metal forms.
That is not a contradiction so much as an unmapped enclosure. Apple publishes materials in two different places, marketing copy and recycled-content lines, and the two use the word frame for different purposes, which is worth reading precisely before anyone describes the iPhone Duo as an all-titanium phone.

Two metals, one enclosure, and no part map
Appleās product page leads with titanium, and the press release adds the grade and the finish. The recycled-content lines on the same product then list a 100 percent recycled aluminum frame alongside the 85 percent recycled titanium enclosure.

Both sentences are Appleās. Neither says whether the aluminum sits inside the titanium, behind the displays, or in a chassis the titanium wraps.
The only part Apple describes without ambiguity is the hinge cover, which it says is 3D printed from 100 percent recycled titanium. That is the piece a buyer can see along the spine.
What Grade 5 and mirror-polished actually tell you
Grade 5 is a named titanium designation and nothing more in Appleās materials. Apple publishes no composition, no hardness figure, no tensile strength and no thickness for any titanium part of the phone.
Mirror-polished is a description of the finish on that titanium, not a durability claim. Apple reserves its one scratch-resistance number for the glass, crediting Ceramic Shield 2 on the outer display with three times better scratch resistance.
The two claims sit on different parts, so they do not stack. Nothing Apple has published describes how the polished titanium behaves against scratching, and nothing describes the back glass beyond calling it Ceramic Shield.
The recycled percentages, and what each one measures
Appleās recycled figures are the most specific numbers it publishes about the build, and each one has a different scope. The overall figure is 35 percent recycled content by weight, which is lower than the 40 percent Apple claims for the iPhone 18 Pro.

None of those percentages is a durability statement. A recycled-content figure describes sourcing, and Apple makes no claim anywhere that recycled titanium performs differently from primary titanium.
The iPhone 18 Pro went the other way this year
The contrast inside Appleās own 2026 line is sharp. Appleās tech specs describe the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max as an aluminum unibody design with Ceramic Shield 2 front and Ceramic Shield back, with no titanium named at all.
So the foldable is the titanium phone of this generation and the slab Pro is the aluminum one, which reverses the pairing buyers saw in the previous two Pro generations. Both phones share the same IP68 rating and the same two glass names, as the Duo against the iPhone 18 Pro Max comparison sets out.
Apple gives both a vapor chamber as well, custom on the Duo and next-generation on the 18 Pro, which is a build decision the two share despite the different metals, and one we tracked through the keynote live blog.
What Apple has not said
Apple has not published a part-by-part material map, the grade or alloy of the aluminum, the thickness of any metal section, or a fold-cycle rating for the hinge those metals carry. Repair pricing for the Duo is also unpublished, as it is for everything announced in our event recap.
No one outside Apple has taken an iPhone Duo apart, so the internal layout stays a matter of Appleās wording for now. Pre-orders open Friday, October 16 at 5 a.m. PT, with availability from Friday, October 23 in more than 70 countries and regions and 28 more on Friday, October 30.
