iPhone Duo Unknowns, by Date: What Apple Fills In Before October 30, and What It Never Will

Some of what Apple has not yet published about the iPhone Duo has a date attached to it, and the rest has no date at all. Sorting the gaps that way is more useful than listing them, because it tells you which questions will be answered before you have to decide and which ones will still be open when you pay $1,999.

Everything below is Apple’s own published schedule. Pre-orders open Friday, October 16 at 5 a.m. PT and the phone ships Friday, October 23, six weeks after it was announced.

What September fills in, and what it does not

Nothing consumer-facing about the Duo is dated in September. iOS 27 ships on Monday, September 14 for every other supported iPhone, and the fold is listed on that compatibility list even though it does not exist at retail, because it arrives on iOS 27.1 instead. Apple has not dated or released that version.

The September dates that do exist belong to developers: two Group Lab slots on the 16th and 17th, three question sessions on the 23rd, and the tools themselves marked only as coming later this month. None of it produces a published list of apps ready for a 7.6-inch screen.

What October 16 fills in

Pre-order morning is when Apple’s store pages become the source rather than its press release. Three things become checkable then.

  • Whether your country is in the first wave. Apple names 18 markets out of more than 70 in its press release, so most of the list has never been published, and none of the 28 that follow on October 30 has been named.
  • What the accessories actually are. The case and folio go up for order the same morning, with no weight, material or wireless charging detail published so far.
  • The exact configuration prices as Apple presents them at checkout, against the $1,999, $2,199, $2,599 and $3,199 tiers it has published for 256GB through 2TB.

What October 16 will not settle is anything physical. Nobody outside Apple will have folded the phone by then, so the durability questions travel through pre-order day untouched.

What October 23 fills in

Availability day is the real dividing line, because it is the first date on which information can come from anywhere other than Apple.

  • Capacity and memory figures, which for iPhones have historically surfaced through regulatory filings and teardowns once hardware is on sale rather than from Apple.
  • The support library. Apple has published no manual or support document for the Duo, and its iPhone manuals index still stops at the iPhone 17 family, so October is when that would normally change.
  • How the fold behaves in use, including the crease, the hinge and the two-battery day, none of which Apple has quantified.

The questions with no date at all

UnpublishedWhat Apple published instead
A fold-cycle or hinge durability ratingA hinge of more than 100 components in Grade 5 titanium, with custom adhesives for flex relief
Any measurement of the creaseA nano-texture finish Apple says minimizes the visible crease
Battery capacityUp to 24 hours typical use, 44 and 31 hours of video, 37 and 26 hours streamed
MemoryUp to 50 percent more memory bandwidth than A19 Pro
Repair or screen-replacement pricingNothing, for any component
A per-device AppleCare+ priceNothing, for any September 2026 product
Screen protector guidance for the folding panelA custom polymer cover with a scratch-resistant coating
The full country list for October 23 and all of October 3018 named markets and two dates

Those eight are the ones to weigh against the price, and they are why the iPhone 18 Pro Max at $1,299 is the easier phone to judge: the specifications Apple published for it describe a shape that has been tested in public before.

What Apple has not said

  • A release date for iOS 27.1, the version iPhone Duo ships with.
  • A date for the Xcode 27.1 beta, the Duo documentation or the workshops, beyond later this month.
  • A date for any iPhone Duo support document, manual or care guidance.
  • A durability rating, a crease figure, a capacity figure, a memory figure or a repair price, at any point.
  • Which countries are in the 70-plus first wave beyond the 18 it names, or any of the 28 in the second.

The next dated event is Monday, September 14, when iOS 27 arrives for other iPhones. For the Duo itself, the calendar runs October 16 for pre-orders, October 23 for the first shipments and October 30 for the second wave, and the rest of the September 9 lineup reaches stores on Friday, September 18, five weeks ahead of it.
