Touchscreen MacBook Pro ports and charging: Thunderbolt 5, HDMI and which charger you need

Ports on the side of the MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR display

Apple’s new MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR display keeps the full set of ports pro users asked for, and adds Thunderbolt 5 across the range. Every model has three Thunderbolt 5 ports, HDMI, an SDXC card slot, MagSafe and a headphone jack. Prices start at $2,899 for the 14-inch M5 Pro and $3,399 for the 16-inch, and machines arrive Friday, November 6, according to Apple’s announcement.

Every PROLED MacBook Pro gets three Thunderbolt 5 ports, HDMI, SDXC, MagSafe 3 and a headphone jack

Here’s the port layout from Apple’s release and specs page:

  • Three Thunderbolt 5 (USB-C) ports, rated up to 120Gb/s on Apple’s PROLED XDR specs page
  • HDMI, which Apple says supports multichannel audio output
  • An SDXC card slot
  • MagSafe 3 for charging
  • A 3.5mm headphone jack with support for high-impedance headphones

That’s the same set of port types on both the 14-inch and 16-inch, and on both chips. You don’t give up the card slot or HDMI by picking the smaller laptop. For comparison, Apple’s PROLED XDR specs page lists the 14-inch MacBook Pro with M6 at three Thunderbolt 4 ports rated up to 40Gb/s, so the PROLED models triple the rated bandwidth per port.

M5 Pro drives up to three external displays and M5 Max drives up to four

External display support depends on the chip, and these numbers are on top of the built-in PROLED XDR display, which keeps running at full resolution.

  • M5 Pro: up to three external displays. Apple lists three at 6K/60Hz or 4K/165Hz, or one at 8K/60Hz, 5K/120Hz or 4K/240Hz plus a second at 5K/120Hz or 4K/200Hz.
  • M5 Max: up to four external displays. Apple lists four at 6K/60Hz or 4K/165Hz, or two at 8K/60Hz, 5K/120Hz or 4K/240Hz.

Apple’s PROLED XDR specs page says Thunderbolt 5 runs native DisplayPort 2.1 output. If you run a desk with three or more monitors, or you want two 8K panels, the M5 Max is the only way to get there.

The Apple N1 chip brings Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread

Wireless runs through the Apple-designed N1 chip. It adds Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6, and Apple’s PROLED XDR specs page also lists Thread. Apple notes that Wi-Fi 7 availability varies by country, so check your region if you’re buying for faster wireless. Touch ID stays on board for secure login.

Fast charging gets you to 50 percent in about 30 minutes with the right adapter

Apple says the MacBook Pro can charge to 50 percent in about 30 minutes. The release doesn’t spell out the conditions, but Apple’s PROLED XDR specs page lists fast charging with a 96W or higher USB-C Power Delivery adapter on the 14-inch, and 140W or higher on the 16-inch. Here’s what ships in the box:

  • 14-inch M5 Pro with 15-core CPU: 70W USB-C adapter
  • 14-inch M5 Pro with 18-core CPU, or 14-inch M5 Max: 96W USB-C adapter
  • 16-inch M5 Pro or M5 Max: 140W USB-C adapter

So the base 14-inch model is the one to watch. Its 70W adapter sits below the 96W that Apple lists for fast charging, which means you’d need a bigger adapter to hit that 50 percent in 30 minutes figure. The other configurations ship with an adapter that already meets the bar.

Apple sells its adapters separately at these US prices:

  • 70W USB-C Power Adapter: $59
  • 96W USB-C Power Adapter: $79
  • 140W USB-C Power Adapter: $99
  • World Travel Adapter Kit: $39

Battery life is rated at up to 24 hours. Apple tested in September 2026 and says results vary by use and configuration. The 14-inch has a 72.6Wh battery and the 16-inch a 100Wh battery, per the specs page.

Base 14-inch buyers should budget $79 for the 96W adapter if fast charging is a must

If you charge mostly overnight or at your desk, the included 70W adapter on the base 14-inch is fine. If you work between flights and meetings and want that quick top-up, add the $79 96W adapter at checkout. It’s a small cost against a $2,899 laptop.

If you need more than three external displays, skip the M5 Pro and go straight to M5 Max. Everyone else gets the same ports, the same N1 wireless and the same Thunderbolt 5 speeds whichever size you pick.
