Rivian is Preparing an Apple Watch App for Wrist-Based Vehicle Controls

Rivian is preparing an Apple Watch app that allows owners to unlock doors, adjust settings, and control vehicles directly from their wrist.

Electric vehicle maker Rivian is preparing to launch a dedicated Apple Watch app that lets owners control their vehicles directly from their wrist. The app expands Rivian’s software experience and reduces the need to pull out a phone for everyday actions. Owners can unlock doors, adjust settings, and even prepare the vehicle before a drive, all from the watch.

The new Apple Watch app arrives as part of Rivian’s upcoming 2026.03 software update, tied to version 3.9 of the Rivian mobile app. Once available, it gives drivers quick access to essential vehicle controls. You can lock or unlock doors, vent windows, and sound the alarm with a tap. The Digital Crown handles deeper controls like setting a target charge level or adjusting cabin temperature. The app also allows up to four customizable quick actions, which helps drivers reach their most-used features faster.

According to release notes shared by RivianTrackr, the update focuses on extending digital access to more vehicles, including older models. The notes state:

“The latest Rivian mobile app update includes a companion app for your Apple Watch. This allows you to remotely access and control your vehicle from your Apple Watch.”

This update matters most for owners of first-generation Rivian vehicles built between 2021 and 2024. These models did not support Apple’s built-in digital car key system. With the new app, they gain Apple Watch-based access for the first time, though the app must remain open for the key to work. Newer Rivian models, starting with the 2025 model year, already support Apple Wallet-based Car Keys, which work even when the app is not open.

The Apple Watch app builds on Rivian’s recent move to support Apple Wallet digital keys. On newer vehicles, drivers can unlock and start the car using an iPhone or Apple Watch without touching the Rivian app. The new watch app does not replace that system. Instead, it fills the gap for older vehicles and adds faster access to controls for all supported owners.

Overall, Rivian’s Apple Watch app brings practical convenience. It turns the watch into a lightweight control center and gives older vehicles features that were previously limited to newer models.
