The S11 chip inside Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4 includes something Apple calls a Secure Exclave, a hardware-isolated compartment built specifically to handle audio. Apple has never described a component like it on any earlier Apple Watch chip, and it exists because the new Audio Intelligence features need somewhere private to process what the microphone hears.
Apple’s own wording is direct: “Audio Intelligence uses the built-in microphone and secure S11 chip in Series 12, alongside the power of Apple Intelligence, to help you make sense of what you hear in a private and secure way.” The Secure Exclave is the specific piece of that sentence that makes the privacy claim possible, and most of what it enables is not available on September 14.

What the Secure Exclave does, in Apple’s own words
Apple describes the Secure Exclave as a dedicated, hardware-isolated compartment, and pairs that description with a specific privacy claim: no audio recordings are created or stored. The compartment is what lets the watch keep a rolling sense of recent sound without turning that sound into a file that persists anywhere on the device. Apple calls the S11 overall its most powerful wearable chip, and the Secure Exclave sits alongside the same silicon that runs the new Health Sensing System, with heart rate measured every five seconds and HRV measured every five minutes.

Why this is a first for Apple Watch silicon
No earlier Apple Watch chip generation is described in Apple’s own materials as having a dedicated audio-isolation compartment. The S11 needed one because it is the first Apple Watch chip built to keep a microphone effectively listening in the background, across four separate features, without any of that audio leaving an isolated space. Nothing about the Health Sensing System, Readiness score or earlier heart-rate features required anything like it, which is why the component is new to this generation specifically.

Sound Recognition also carries a hardware gate on top of the timing: Apple limits it to Series 12 or Ultra 4, so it will not reach older watches even after it leaves beta. Apple’s own comparison notes that Ultra 4 uses the identical Secure Exclave and Audio Intelligence feature set as Series 12, so none of this is scaled down for the more expensive watch.
Where it does not work yet
Audio Intelligence is not initially available in the EU, and it requires an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone paired to the watch, so the feature set is gated by geography and by which iPhone a person owns, not only by which watch they buy. Apple also states the features are subject to daily usage limits, without specifying what those limits are.
What Apple has not said
Apple has not published a firm date within “late 2026” for Sound Recognition, Live Rewind or Siri Recap, has not detailed the daily usage limits attached to Audio Intelligence, and has not said when, or if, the EU exclusion will lift. Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4 reach stores Friday, September 18, 2026, with the Secure Exclave active in hardware from day one even though most of what it was built for is still in beta.
