The Six Days Before iPhone 18 Pro Arrives: What Apple Has Published About Getting Ready

Between Saturday’s pre-order and Friday’s delivery, Apple has published exactly one dated event that touches the phone you are still carrying: iOS 27 ships free on Monday, September 14, four days before iPhone 18 Pro itself arrives. Past that single date, and past the short prep list Apple sends to anyone trading in a device, there is no published getting-ready checklist for this specific launch.

That is worth saying plainly rather than filling in with guesswork. Apple documents plenty about the new phone and comparatively little about the week spent waiting for it.

iOS 27 lands on your current phone first

If your current iPhone is on Apple’s published eligibility list, iPhone 11 and later, plus iPhone SE from the second generation on, it becomes eligible for iOS 27 on Monday, four days before the new phone even ships with the same software preinstalled. Apple has not published a reason to update the outgoing phone first or to leave it alone until the new one arrives.

Or get it by email

The only update mechanic Apple has on record is the general one it has described for years, not anything written specifically for iOS 27: “Automatically Install: When an update is available, iPhone downloads and installs the update overnight while charging and connected to Wi-Fi.” That description comes from Apple’s general update support page, last updated in December 2025, so treat it as the long-standing mechanic rather than confirmation of how iOS 27 specifically behaves.

The eSIM shift, if your current phone still has a SIM tray

iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max are eSIM only. Apple’s specs page states the models do not support a physical SIM, and its footnote on the requirement is short: “Use of an eSIM requires a carrier that supports eSIM and a wireless service plan. See carrier for details.” Apple defers the rest to the carrier entirely. If your current phone still uses a removable SIM, the six days before delivery are the window to confirm with your carrier that eSIM is supported on your plan, because nothing on Apple’s own pages will tell you that.

If you are trading in your current iPhone

Trading in is a separate, more fully documented process than getting ready in general. Apple’s confirmation email for a trade-in carries its own short prep list: back up the device, turn off Find My, and sign out. That trade-in estimate, once you have it, stays valid for 14 days after you receive your new device, so the clock on the estimate does not start on pre-order day, it starts on delivery day, whenever that turns out to be for your order.

What Apple has not said

  • No dedicated getting-ready checklist for iPhone 18 Pro specifically, distinct from the general iOS update mechanic and the trade-in confirmation email.
  • No statement on whether updating your current phone to iOS 27 before transferring data changes anything about that transfer.
  • No download size or free-space figure for iOS 27, so the usual “make room first” advice has no published number to attach to it this year.
  • No guidance beyond “see carrier for details” on confirming eSIM support before your current phone’s SIM becomes irrelevant.

iOS 27 ships Monday, September 14. iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max become available Friday, September 18. In the four days between them, the most useful thing Apple has actually published is the eligibility list for the software update, not a checklist for the phone.
