Two Apple pages published in the same week give different answers about when Sound Recognition works on the new watches. Apple support document 148354 lists Sound Recognition as available, while the Apple Watch Series 12 product page groups it with Live Rewind and Siri Recap as coming late 2026.
Both are Apple’s own pages and neither carries a correction, so this is a disagreement to report rather than one we can settle. It matters because Sound Recognition is the one Audio Intelligence feature with an alerting job, and because it is the only one of the four that an iPhone 11 owner qualifies for.

Support document 148354 is titled About Audio Intelligence features on Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4, and it was published on September 9. It names four capabilities, then separates them by status: Sound Recognition and Music Recognition are listed as available, and Live Rewind and Siri Recap are described as launching in beta later in 2026.

The Series 12 marketing page treats the group differently. Its feature list carries Audio Intelligence with Live Rewind, Siri Recap and Sound Recognition together, marked as coming late 2026.

The two pages agree on Live Rewind and Siri Recap. They disagree on Sound Recognition alone.
Why the difference matters on September 18
Sound Recognition is the feature with the lowest entry price in the group. It needs one of the two new watches, but on the iPhone side it asks only for an iPhone 11 or later, or an iPhone SE 2nd generation or later, where Live Rewind and Siri Recap require an iPhone 16 or newer.
That makes it the one Audio Intelligence feature a buyer with an older iPhone could reasonably count on when a Series 12 arrives on Friday, September 18. Whether it is there that day is exactly what the two pages contradict each other about.
What is not in dispute
- The hardware requirement. Sound Recognition needs Series 12 or Apple Watch Ultra 4, and no earlier watch is listed.
- The sounds Apple names: sirens, alarms, doorbells and a crying baby.
- The chip. Both watches use the S11, which Apple says includes a Secure Exclave, a dedicated hardware-isolated compartment used for on-device audio processing. Apple states that no audio recordings are stored.
- The language. English to start, with additional languages planned and no date given.
- The regional note. Apple repeats in the support document that Siri AI will not be available initially in the EU on iOS, iPadOS and watchOS.
How we are reporting it
Where two Apple pages conflict and neither has been updated, we print both and name the page each figure came from. We are not treating the newer support document as an automatic override, because the marketing page carries the same late 2026 label on the two features the document also defers, which suggests the grouping is deliberate rather than stale.
Apple has also not yet published tech-spec support documents for Series 12 or Ultra 4, so there is no third Apple page to break the tie.
What Apple has not said
- Which of its two pages is correct about Sound Recognition.
- Whether Sound Recognition is present in watchOS 27 at launch or arrives in a later update.
- Any date more precise than late 2026 for the features it defers.
- Whether the beta status applies to Sound Recognition as well as to Live Rewind and Siri Recap.
- Which additional sounds, if any, will be added to the four it names.
