watchOS 27 arrives free on Monday, September 14, and four of its changes were never mentioned on stage: a single Find My app, Wallet passes made by scanning a plastic membership card, Call Context on your wrist, and a setup path for a child’s Apple Watch. None of the four needs an Apple Watch Series 12 or the new S11 chip.
That matters because the headline watch features of September do need new hardware. Apple’s list of eight compatible watches reaches back to Series 9 and Ultra 2, and these four items are the part of the update that lands on all of them at once.

The iPhone line is worth reading twice. Apple’s watchOS compatibility footnote says iPhone 11 or later or iPhone SE (2nd generation or later) with iOS 27, while the health press release from September 9 says iPhone SE (3rd generation). Both are Apple’s wording, and Apple has not reconciled them. The iOS 27 release is the prerequisite either way.

The Find My app becomes one app
Apple is consolidating Find My on the watch into a single app covering Devices, Items and People in one map view, replacing the split apps that watch owners have used for years.
Apple lists the consolidated app for Series 9 and later and Ultra 2 and later, which is every model on the watchOS 27 compatibility list. Apple has published no separate feature list for what the app can and cannot do compared with the iPhone version.
Wallet turns a plastic card into a watch pass
In the 27 release, Wallet can scan a loyalty or membership card that carries a QR code or barcode and turn it into a digital pass, and that pass can be pinned to the Smart Stack on Apple Watch.
This is the one new watch feature most likely to be used daily by people who have no interest in the health system Apple spent its Series 12 announcement on. Apple has not published which card types it recognises or any limit on the number of passes.
Call Context, and setting up a watch for a child
Call Context surfaces relevant information from your apps when you call a business, such as a reservation code or a confirmation number. Apple lists it in English only.
The child features are the quieter pair: Child Account controls and an Apple Watch for your kids setup path, both listed on Apple’s watchOS 27 preview page. Apple has published no age floor for the setup itself, although Siri AI on watchOS is not available to users under 13.

Read that alongside the Ultra 4 specifications and the split is clear. The interface and app changes are free on Monday, the sensing and audio features are hardware, and two of the biggest names on Apple’s own slides are dated later in the year. watchOS 27 installs from the Watch app on an iPhone already running iOS 27, and both updates are dated Monday, September 14. Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4, which ship with the release on board, reach stores on Friday, September 18.
