Which iPhones Support AirTag 2 Precision Finding

AirTag 2 is now available, and Apple highlights its improved Precision Finding as one of the biggest upgrades. The new model uses a stronger Ultra Wideband chip that extends tracking distance by up to 50 percent, but not every iPhone can use this wider range.

Apple explains this limit on its website. In a small footnote, the company says the improved Precision Finding feature only works when you pair AirTag 2 with iPhone Air or iPhone 15 and newer models, except for the iPhone 16e.

Which iPhones Support the New Range

Here is the full list of iPhones that can use the extended Precision Finding range with AirTag 2.

  • iPhone 17
  • iPhone 17 Pro
  • iPhone 17 Pro Max
  • iPhone Air
  • iPhone 16
  • iPhone 16 Plus
  • iPhone 16 Pro
  • iPhone 16 Pro Max
  • iPhone 15
  • iPhone 15 Plus
  • iPhone 15 Pro
  • iPhone 15 Pro Max

These models include a newer Ultra Wideband chip that Apple introduced starting with the iPhone 15 lineup. This newer hardware allows the AirTag 2 to send and receive signals over a longer distance, which makes it easier to find lost items from farther away.

If you use an older iPhone, or the iPhone 16e, AirTag 2 still works with Precision Finding. You can track your keys, bag, or other items just like before. However, the tracking range stays the same as the first AirTag.

As a result, one of the main reasons to upgrade to AirTag 2 does not apply to these phones. You still get a reliable tracker, but you do not get the longer reach that Apple promotes with the new model.

This makes iPhone choice an important part of the AirTag 2 experience. If you own one of the supported models, you get the full benefit of the new hardware. If not, AirTag 2 behaves much like the original when it comes to how far Precision Finding can work.
