A HomeKit Secure Video camera can show a live picture while failing to save the motion clip you expected. Recording has its own Home and Away settings, motion filters and iCloud+ requirements, so a working stream does not confirm that every recording condition is correct.
Apple’s current camera setup guide says recording can be configured separately for when people are home and away. It also explains that choosing a specific motion type produces fewer clips because movement outside the selected people, animal, vehicle or package categories is ignored.
Open the camera in the Home app, tap the Settings button and review Recording Options for both presence states. If When Home is set to Stream Only, for example, you can watch the feed but the camera will not create clips while the household is marked as home.

Check recording settings in this order
- Confirm that the relevant Home or Away mode is set to Stream & Allow Recording, then check whether the Home app has identified household presence correctly.
- Temporarily change the recording trigger from specific motion to any motion. If clips return, one of the recognition filters was excluding the event rather than the camera failing to record.
- Inspect Activity Zones and make sure the expected movement occurred inside a selected zone. Apple notes that zones affect camera recording and alerts, but not separate motion-detection automations.
- Verify the owner’s iCloud+ plan and camera count. Apple lists support for one camera on 50GB, five on 200GB and unlimited cameras on 2TB, 6TB and 12TB plans.
- Check that the Apple TV 4K or HomePod acting as the home hub is online, then install current updates for the hub, iPhone and camera firmware.
Do not delete the home or reset the camera as a first step because both actions can create more setup work without identifying the cause. Our overview of devices that qualify as an Apple home hub can help confirm the hub requirement, while our iOS 27 HomeKit Secure Video guide explains the newer 4K and AI-related limits.
If clips are still missing after those checks, note the time, motion type and current presence mode before contacting the camera maker. That record makes it easier to distinguish an accessory detection problem from a Home app, hub or account configuration issue.
