iOS 27 Call Screening: How It Works, Who It Screens and Its Limits

Call Screening in iOS 27 can ask an unknown caller for a name and reason before your iPhone rings. It gives you more context than a bare phone number, but it does not verify the caller’s identity or guarantee that a suspicious call is safe.

According to Apple’s iPhone guide, the feature automatically answers calls from unknown numbers without interrupting you. After the caller responds, the iPhone rings and displays that response so you can answer, decline, or let the call continue to voicemail.

You can choose the behavior under Settings > Apps > Phone. Our earlier Call Screening setup guide explains the controls, while iOS 27 keeps the important distinction between screening an unfamiliar number and simply silencing it.

Choose the right unknown caller setting

The Never option turns screening off, so unsaved numbers ring normally. Ask Reason for Calling performs the screening step before the phone rings. Silence sends unsaved numbers to voicemail instead. Apple also provides separate Unknown Callers and Spam filters that organize calls or silence numbers identified by a carrier as potential fraud.

The system focuses on unsaved numbers, so adding important contacts such as a school, clinic, delivery desk, or building entrance can prevent unnecessary screening. Apple says screening turns off for 24 hours after you call emergency services, which helps make return calls easier to receive.

Call Screening has practical limits. A caller can provide a false name or misleading reason, carrier spam identification varies, and legitimate first-time callers may hang up when they hear the prompt. The spoken screening also uses the iPhone’s default language, so language and regional support can affect the experience.

Ask Reason for Calling offers the best balance for many people because it preserves the chance to answer an important new contact. People who receive frequent legitimate calls from new numbers may prefer Never, while users who want minimal interruption can choose Silence and review voicemail and filtered lists later.
