Apple sells AirPods 5 in two versions: AirPods 5 at $129 and AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case at $149. The $20 gap covers two things, wireless charging and a force sensor for swipe volume control, and the earbuds themselves are identical in every spec Apple has published.
That makes the choice a question of how you charge and whether you want volume control on the earbuds. Both models opened for pre-order today, September 9, and reach stores on Friday, September 18.
What the $149 AirPods 5 model adds

- Wireless charging with Apple Watch chargers, Qi chargers and USB-C
- A force sensor with swipe volume control, which Apple calls a first for the open-ear form factor
Apple does not describe the standard AirPods 5 case in detail, beyond the model name indicating that it does not charge wirelessly.
What both AirPods 5 models share
Everything Apple says about sound, noise cancellation and battery applies to both boxes. That includes the headline claim of up to 50 percent more noise removed than AirPods 4 with ANC, thanks to a multiport acoustic architecture inspired by AirPods Pro 3.

Hands-free Siri AI on either model requires iOS 27, arriving Monday, September 14, and an iPhone that supports Apple Intelligence, such as the iPhone 18 Pro.
Which AirPods 5 model should you buy?
Pick the $149 model if you already drop an Apple Watch or a phone on a charging puck at night, or if you want to adjust volume without reaching for your phone. Those are the only two things the extra money buys.
Pick the $129 model if you plug in anyway and control volume from your phone or watch. You get the same noise cancellation, the same battery figures and the same Siri AI features for less.
One caveat: Apple has published a single figure of up to 22 hours with the case, without separating the two cases, so it is unclear whether the wireless case changes total listening time.
