The iPhone 18 Pro replaces the iPhone 14 Pro’s A16 Bionic with a 2-nanometer A20 Pro, its fixed f/1.78 main camera with a variable aperture that runs from f/1.48 to f/4.0, its 3x telephoto with a 4x lens that also gives 8x optical-quality zoom, and its Lightning port with USB-C at 10 Gb/s. Apple rates the new phone at up to 36 hours of video playback against 23 hours for the 14 Pro, and it costs $1,199 for 256GB, $200 more than the $999 the 14 Pro launched at with 128GB.
The iPhone 14 Pro went on sale on September 16, 2022, and Apple no longer sells it; Apple’s trade-in page quotes an estimated value of up to $285 for one today. Apple’s iOS 27 page lists the 14 Pro as compatible with the September 14 update, but full Apple Intelligence needs an iPhone 15 Pro or later, the biggest software gap between the two. Chip and display: A16 Bionic to A20 Pro
The A20 Pro is four generations on from the A16 Bionic. Apple’s published gains are all relative to the A19 Pro: a 7-core GPU up to 40 percent faster, a dual 16-core Neural Engine with double the AI processing, and 50 percent more memory bandwidth. Apple has not published a direct A16 to A20 Pro figure.

The chip sits on a vapor chamber Apple says has about three times the cooling performance of the prior design, alongside the N1 chip for Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread and the C2 modem. Our A20 Pro explainer covers what the 2nm process changes.
The display grows from 6.1 to 6.3 inches at the same 460 ppi, with ProMotion on both. The 14 Pro introduced the Dynamic Island; on the 18 Pro it is smaller and shows up to three Live Activities at once, and Apple rates the screen at 3000 nits peak outdoors.
Cameras: fixed f/1.78 to variable aperture, 3x to 8x
Both phones have a 48MP main camera at 24 mm, but the 14 Pro’s aperture is fixed at f/1.78 while the 18 Pro’s six-blade variable aperture stops at f/1.48, f/1.8, f/2.8 and f/4.0, with manual aperture and shutter speed controls in the Camera app. The Ultra Wide keeps its 13 mm, f/2.2 and 120-degree field of view but moves from 12MP to 48MP.
The telephoto is the bigger jump. The 14 Pro’s 12MP 3x lens at 77 mm becomes a 48MP 4x tetraprism lens at 100 mm with 3D sensor-shift stabilization, and Apple lists a 12MP 8x crop at 200 mm as optical quality. Apple’s optical zoom range goes from 6x on the 14 Pro to 16x on the 18 Pro. The 14 Pro’s spec page lists digital zoom up to 15x; Apple’s 18 Pro spec summary does not state a digital maximum.

Battery, charging and the end of Lightning
Apple rates the 14 Pro at up to 23 hours of video playback and 20 hours streamed. The 18 Pro is rated at 36 hours of video playback, 33 hours streamed and 24 hours of typical use. Wired charging moves from 50 percent in around 30 minutes with a 20W adapter to 50 percent in around 15 minutes with a 60W USB-C adapter, and wireless goes from 15W MagSafe and 7.5W Qi to 25W MagSafe and 25W Qi2.
The 14 Pro is a Lightning phone with USB 2 speeds; the 18 Pro’s USB-C port runs USB 3 at up to 10 Gb/s. In the US and 11 other countries the 18 Pro has no SIM tray; our eSIM-only country list covers who is affected.
Size, materials, storage and price
The 14 Pro is 147.5 x 71.5 x 7.85 mm and 206 g with a stainless steel band and textured matte glass back. The 18 Pro is 150.0 x 71.9 x 8.75 mm and 211 g, 5 g heavier, with an aluminum unibody, Ceramic Shield 2 front and Ceramic Shield back.
