iPhone Duo hides a FaceTime camera under its 7.6-inch inner display. Apple’s tech specs give it an f/1.8 aperture and 1080p video at 30 to 60 fps, and that is close to everything Apple has published about it.
It is the first iPhone with a camera behind the screen, and Apple has been careful about how it describes it. The press release does not mention it at all, and the tech specs list what the camera does, not how it is hidden, so this piece separates the confirmed specs from the open questions, with the rest of the hardware in our iPhone Duo vs iPhone 18 Pro comparison.
What Apple says the under-display camera can do
The inner camera is listed on Apple’s tech specs as an under-display FaceTime camera with an f/1.8 aperture, and it records 1080p video at 30 to 60 fps. The f/1.8 figure is brighter than the f/2.2 outer camera, which is expected for a lens that has to gather light through a display layer.

Its job is video calls and selfies when the phone is open. Apple’s product page pairs it with Duo FaceTime, which lets nearby friends join a call on the outer display while you use the inner one, and with Center Stage on the rear camera for a higher-quality option when the phone is propped up.

What it cannot do
The under-display camera does not support Face ID. iPhone Duo uses Touch ID in the side button, which works whether the phone is open or closed, supports multiple fingers and can unlock with an Apple Watch, so there is no facial authentication on either display.
It also trails the outer camera on paper. The outer 12MP Center Stage camera records 4K Dolby Vision video at up to 60 fps, while the inner camera tops out at 1080p, so for the best selfie or the sharpest video call you close the phone and use the outer screen.
Apple has not listed Center Stage framing for the inner camera, only for the outer camera and the rear system. The tech specs also give no photo resolution for the inner camera, so its still-image quality is unknown until we can test it.
What Apple has not published
Most of the interesting questions have no official answer yet. Apple has not published the megapixel count of the under-display camera, whether the camera is visible as a faint patch in the 430 ppi inner panel, how the display renders pixels above the sensor, or whether the nano-texture finish and the custom polymer cover Apple describes for the inner display affect the camera.
Apple has also not said whether the inner camera supports Portrait mode, Cinematic mode or any of the Duo-exclusive features such as Smart Take, all of which are described in terms of the rear cameras and the outer display. Any claims about a hidden Face ID system are wrong on the published specs, since Apple lists Touch ID as the only biometric option.
iPhone Duo pre-orders open Friday, October 16 at 5 a.m. PT, with availability on Friday, October 23 in more than 70 countries.
