iPhone Duo and iPhone 18 Pro both have 48MP main cameras, but the Pro’s has a variable aperture from f/1.48 to f/4 and sits next to a telephoto lens, while the Duo’s is fixed at f/1.6 and covers zoom with an integrated 2x crop. On optics alone the iPhone 18 Pro wins; the Duo answers with 120 fps video and four features the Pro cannot do.
The comparison matters because the Duo starts at $1,999 against $1,199 for the iPhone 18 Pro, and the camera is the one place where the more expensive phone gives something up. Where the iPhone 18 Pro wins: aperture and telephoto
The Pro’s variable aperture uses six laser-cut blades to move between f/1.48 and f/4, which gives it both a brighter maximum aperture than the Duo’s f/1.6 and the option to stop down for more depth of field. Apple pairs it with manual aperture and shutter speed controls in the Camera app, and neither is listed for the Duo.

The Pro also keeps a dedicated telephoto lens. The Duo’s 2x is a 12MP crop from the 48MP Main sensor, and anything beyond it is digital zoom, so long-range shots are the clearest gap between the two phones. Where the iPhone Duo wins: frame rate and the second display
The Duo’s tech specs list 4K Dolby Vision at 24 to 120 fps on the rear cameras, and Apple’s press release says the Main camera has zero shutter lag. The iPhone 18 Pro release only specifies 60 fps for Cinematic effects and does not give a top frame rate for standard 4K video, so Apple has not published a direct comparison.
The bigger difference is the outer display. Smart Take, Duo Preview, Kid Cue and Duo FaceTime all use it while the rear cameras face the subject, and Center Stage on the rear camera lets you shoot yourself with the good lenses. The Pro has nothing equivalent, though it adds Apple Reference Image, which stores a verified original alongside edits, and Apple has not said whether the Duo gets it.
What they share
Both phones run on the A20 Pro and get the same processing features: Smart Focus subject tracking, Photographic Styles with texture and grain controls, Night mode and Cinematic effects at 60 fps. Both have a Camera Control button, and Apple says the Duo’s Ultra Wide matches the Pro’s.
Which wins depends on what you shoot. For portraits, low light, manual control and anything past 2x, the iPhone 18 Pro is the better camera on Apple’s published specs. For group shots, kids, video calls and high-frame-rate video, the Duo has tools the Pro lacks.
