An M1 Pro or M1 Max MacBook Pro can still be worth buying in 2026 when the price is low enough and the machine is in good condition. Its display, ports and media engines remain capable, although buyers should compare the total cost with newer discounted Macs rather than judging the processor alone.
Apple’s 2021 MacBook Pro specifications show that the 16-inch model offers a Liquid Retina XDR display, ProMotion up to 120Hz, HDMI, an SDXC slot, MagSafe 3 and three Thunderbolt 4 ports. M1 Max versions support up to 64GB of unified memory and four external displays.
The hardware also supports Apple Intelligence, but newer Macs provide faster neural and graphics processing, newer wireless standards and longer remaining software support. Apple does not publish a guaranteed macOS support end date, so nobody can promise exactly how many major updates an M1 model has left.

What to inspect before buying
Battery health should be the first check because a heavily used 2021 notebook may need service sooner than its processor suggests. Ask for the cycle count, maximum capacity, serial-number coverage and clear photographs of the display, keyboard, ports and enclosure before paying.
Memory and storage cannot be upgraded later. A 16GB M1 Pro is still suitable for general work and lighter creative tasks, while 32GB or more gives demanding applications and virtual machines more room. An M1 Max is valuable mainly when its additional GPU power, media engines or display support match the intended workload.
Compare the used price with current models and recent M5 Pro MacBook Pro discounts. A newer Mac may include a fresh battery, warranty coverage and better efficiency, which can outweigh a seemingly impressive discount on older high-end hardware.
Buy the M1 MacBook Pro when its configuration meets your needs and the price reflects its age. Skip it when battery service, uncertain history and a small gap to a newer machine erase the savings.
