macOS 27 Golden Gate arrives as a free update on Monday, September 14, 2026, and it runs on Apple silicon Macs only, from the new MacBook Neo back to the 2020 MacBook Air. It is also one of just two platforms where Siri AI works in the European Union at launch, which is the largest single difference between the Mac release and the iPhone one.

Apple’s macOS page carries the date in its hero line, “macOS 27 Golden Gate available starting 9.14.” Apple’s developer releases page shows the macOS 27.0 release candidate, build 26A428, went out on September 9, the day of the “Surprise and shine” event covered in our event recap.

macOS 27 release date and compatible Macs

Apple has not published a release time. Its software updates usually appear around 10 a.m. Pacific, the same caveat that applies to the September 14 iOS 27 release.

The compatibility list on Apple’s macOS page reads: MacBook Neo (2026), MacBook Air with Apple silicon (2020 and later), MacBook Pro with Apple silicon (2020 and later), iMac with Apple silicon (2021 and later), Mac mini with Apple silicon (2020 and later), Mac Studio (2022 and later), and Mac Pro with Apple silicon (2023). No Intel Mac appears anywhere on it.

Apple Intelligence asks for the same Apple silicon rather than a narrower subset: MacBook Neo with A18 Pro, MacBook Air and MacBook Pro from M1, iMac from M1, Mac mini from M1, Mac Studio from M1 Max, and Mac Pro with M2 Ultra. In practice, a Mac that can install Golden Gate can run Apple Intelligence.

Siri AI on Mac, and why the EU gets it here

Siri AI ships in beta and in English to start. Apple’s September 9 press release says support for French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish follows in October. Apple Intelligence itself covers 16 languages, including both written forms of Chinese.

The regional split is Apple’s own wording: “Mac and Apple Vision Pro users in the EU will be able to access Siri AI when set to a supported language,” while “Siri AI will not be available initially in the EU in iOS, iPadOS, and watchOS.” Apple says it is working to find a path forward that preserves privacy and security, and has not given a date for the other platforms.

On the Mac itself, Siri AI reads personal context across apps, answers questions about what is on screen, pulls current information from the web, and carries out actions such as drafting an email from scratch or editing and sharing a set of photos. You can type or talk. Visual Intelligence gets a dedicated keyboard shortcut on Mac and analyzes screenshots, which is the Mac equivalent of the Siri mode Apple put in the iPhone Camera app.

The Siri app keeps every conversation in one place and syncs history through iCloud, so a chat started on a Mac can continue on iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch or Apple Vision Pro. Two footnotes are worth reading before you count on a feature: voice customization (pitch, speed, tone and accent) plus the improved on-device Dictation need a Mac with M3 or later and at least 12GB of unified memory, and server-backed features including Siri AI and Image Playground carry daily usage limits, with Apple saying expanded access “will be available for a fee in the future.”

What else is new in Golden Gate

Apple describes the design work as reincorporating cornerstone macOS elements: a more uniform toolbar across the top of apps, edge-to-edge sidebars and colored sidebar icons, plus updated window shapes and menu bar icons. Liquid Glass gets the same Settings slider as iPhone, adjustable from ultra-clear to fully tinted.

  • Safari: tabs group automatically into topics, and Notify Me monitors pages for changes such as restocks and price drops.
  • Photos: Spatial Reframing, the Extend tool and an enhanced Clean Up that removes larger objects.
  • Image Playground for photorealistic images, plus Shortcuts and Calendar entries you create by describing them.
  • Podcasts: video podcasts come to Mac with Picture in Picture, transcripts and chapters.
  • Displays: higher resolutions on ultrawide panels, which Apple gives as 5K at 120Hz.
  • Mail gets the new search ranking for Top Hits, Maps gets Enhanced Flyover, and Call Context surfaces reservation codes and confirmation numbers during calls.
  • Swipe to refresh works in Safari, Mail, News, Podcasts and Calendar.
  • Child safety: Ask to Browse, Time Allowances, Schedules and Communication Safety that now blocks gore and violent content, after the Screen Time update is installed.
  • Accessibility: richer VoiceOver image descriptions and auto-generated video captions with translation.
  • Performance: Apple cites faster AirDrop, faster network file browsing and quicker Safari content loading.

Developers get more than the consumer list suggests. Xcode 27 is Apple silicon only, about 30 percent smaller, and adds agentic coding, a Device Hub, Model Context Protocol support and GitHub and Figma integrations, alongside Swift 6.4 and the Foundation Models framework that app makers use to reach the same models behind Siri AI on iPhone 18 Pro.

What Apple has not said

Apple has not published a release time, and it has not said whether any Intel Mac is supported, only that none is listed. It has not said when Siri AI leaves beta, when the EU gets it on iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch, which languages follow the five due in October, or what the fee for expanded server access will be. The Passwords feature that updates weak or compromised passwords is marked “coming in a future software update” with no date, and Apple has not dated the Screen Time update the child safety features depend on. Nothing in the Mac release notes we have seen mentions new Mac hardware, and none was announced at the event, as our live blog recorded.

The next step is short. On Monday, September 14, open System Settings, then General, then Software Update on a listed Mac. Golden Gate is free, and Siri AI shows up as a beta for systems set to English, including in the EU.
