Apple has worked for years on a new smart home device that many people call the “HomePad,” and the latest reports now suggest that the wait will stretch longer than expected as Apple continues to refine the software that powers the device.
The product aims to combine elements of a HomePod and an iPad, giving users a screen-based hub that controls smart home accessories while also handling music, video calls, and daily information such as weather or calendar events.

Apple currently sells only a small lineup of home products that includes Apple TV 4K, HomePod, and HomePod mini. Because of that limited lineup, the rumored HomePad represents an important expansion of Apple’s smart home strategy, especially as the company tries to build a more connected home ecosystem that works closely with iPhone, iPad, and other Apple devices.
Leaker Kosutami recently posted on X that Apple now expects the HomePad to launch in fall 2026. Reports from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman also indicate that Apple tied the device closely to Siri’s upcoming AI improvements, which means the company will not ship the hardware until those upgrades are ready.
A smart home hub with a display
The HomePad will likely act as a central command hub for the home. Reports suggest the device will feature a 7-inch square display and a front-facing camera that supports video calls. Apple also plans built-in sensors that detect when someone approaches the device and adjust the screen content depending on who is nearby.
Two versions are under development. One version mounts on a wall, while another version sits on a desk or countertop with a speaker base that resembles a HomePod mini.
Siri plays a central role in the HomePad experience because users will rely on voice commands to control devices, request information, and interact with smart home features. Apple still works on major AI upgrades for Siri, and those improvements now appear tied to later versions of iOS.
Earlier rumors expected the HomePad to arrive much sooner, but repeated delays pushed the timeline forward several times. The current schedule suggests the device could appear during Apple’s fall launch window, possibly alongside products such as the iPhone 18 series.
